The "Gnomus" is a small dwarf monster appearing in Russian legend, according to which it lives in the underground and moves around in awkward manner. The explanation given by Stasov on the list of the exhibition reads as follows:

"Gnomus: A dessin of a child toy which was a decoration of a Christmas tree placed at a Christmas party held at the academy of Art in 1869"

Stasov wrote also a letter to his friend later, saying that it looked like a nutcracker doll.

The NHK crew found at the Academy of Art in St.Petersburg a sketch drawn with a pencil. Every Russian could recognize it as Gnomus: Gnomus is staring at us from behind a door. Russians love clever wise and tricky Gnomus.
