Course Objectives:
At the end of semester, the pupil should be able to:
1. Describe their profiles and preferences.
2. Introduce their friends.
3. Use Katakana in sentences
4. Write letters, short sentences, and extend them to short passages.
5. Recognize frequently used Kanji in the short passage.
6. Present their work by using appropriate materials such as visuals.
7. Read short conversations and reports.
Textbooks& Materials:
1. Japanese for young peopleT: Student book (1998) AJALT, Kodansha
2. Japanese for young people Workbook 1.2.3, AJALT, Kodansha
3. Handouts prepared by the instructor.
4. Picture books, video tapes, flash cards, etc.
Evaluation & Rewards:
At the end of semester:
1. The pupil’s listening, speaking, reading, spelling, penmanship, and communication skill will be evaluated by the letter grade: A 90-100, B 80-89, C 70-79, D Needs Attention, and F Failure. Also, his/her homework, attendance, punctuality, attention, effort, motivation, Manners, and responsibility will be evaluated by the letter grade: E=Excellent, S=Satisfactory, U= Unsatisfactory. See the Report Card if necessary.
2. A Final exam.
3. Awards or honors: KAIKINSHO (PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARD) will be given to any pupil who has had perfect attendance during the academic year, and SEIKINSHO (GOOD ATTENDANCE AWARD) to any pupil who has only 1 or 2 absences during the academic year. DORYOKUSYO (EFFORT AWARD) may be given to any pupil whose effort throughout the academic year was laudable.
Notes to parents:
1. Every week the pupil will receive assignments. Children need parents’ support. Please assist your child in learning Japanese at home patiently.
2. Every class, the pupil will have a chance to take a promotion quiz based on the homework.
3. We have snack time between 10:15-10:30 after the gym time. Please let your children bring their own snack.
4. Please purchase the main textbook “Japanese for young peopleT” available at Kinokuniya bookstore, San Francisco: Geary & Webster, Phone 415-567-7625. Bring your registration receipt for 10% discount.

2. Between 10:00 - 10:15m Pupils and instructor will engage in outdoor activities in the gym to develop kinetic developmental skills on children. This activity sill help lesson the stress and lower the anxiety of the children.
