"The sun was shining on the sea,	お日様テカテカ海のうえ、
Shining with all his might:	め一杯照りに照っていた。
He did his very best to make	太陽さんときたら出来るだけ
The billows smooth and bright---	渦巻く大波を滑らかかつきらきらさせていた--
And this was odd, because it was	でも、これって変なの、何故かといえば
The middle of the night.	そもそも真夜中だったもの。
The moon was shining sulkily,	お月様すねて照っていた、
Because she thought the sun	だってお月様は思っていたよ、お日様なんか
Had got no business to be there	昼間のお仕事が終わったら--
After the day was done---	さっさと居なくなればいいんだって。
'It's very rude of him,' she said,	「とっても失礼ですこと」とお月様、
'To come and spoil the fun!'	「私の出る幕をなくすなんて！」
The sea was wet as wet could be,	海は濡れに濡れ、
The sands were dry as dry.	砂は乾きに乾いていた。
You could not see a cloud, because	雲は見えなかった、何故なら
No cloud was in the sky;	雲はひとすじもなかったからだし、
No birds were flying overhead---	頭上を飛び交う鳥もいなかった--
There were no birds to fly.	鳥なんか一羽もいなかったから。
The Walrus and the Carpenter	セイウチと大工とが
Were walking close at hand:	すぐ近くを歩いていたよ。
They wept like anthing to see	あんまり沢山の砂があるものだから
Such quantities of sand:	セイウチと大工とは泣きに泣いたよ、
'If this were only cleared away,'	「この砂がすべて履き捨てられれば、
They said, 'it would be gtrand!'	いいのに！」と言ったのさ。
'If seven maids with seven mops	「七人の乙女が七本のモップでもって
Swept it for half a year	半年も掃いたならどうかね
Do you suppose,' the Walrus said,	綺麗にできると思うかい？」と
'That they could get it clear?'	セイウチは言いました。
'I doubt it,' said the Carpenter,	「怪しいもんさな」と大工は言うと、
And shed a bitter tear.	オイオイと泣きました。
'O Oysters, come and walk with us!'	「やぁ、牡蠣さんたち、一緒においで！」
The Walrus did beseech.	セイウチは頼みましたよ。
'A pleasant walk, a pleasant walk,	「楽しいお散歩だよ、楽しいよ、
along the briny beach:	しょっぱい海岸を散歩しようよ、
We cannot do with more than four,	手を引いてあげたいのは山山だよ、
To give a hand to each.'	でも四本以上は無理だよね。」
The eldest Oyster looked at him,	長老格の牡蠣はセイウチを見たけれど、
But never a word he said:	一言も言わずじまい。
The eldest Oyster winked his eye,	長老格の牡蠣はウィンクすると,
And shook his heavy head---	深深とした頭を振りましたが---
Meaning to say he did not choose	それは自分の寝床を離れないと
To leave the oyster-bed.	いう選択を表わすものでした。
But four young Oysters hurried up,	でも頑是無い四つの牡蠣がさっさと駆けつけたよ、
All eager for the treat:	みんなご馳走が貰いたくてね。
Their coats were brushed, their faces washed,	上着にブラシも掛かり、洗顔済みだよ、
Their shoes were clean and neat---	お靴も綺麗に磨かれてたよ---
And this was odd, because, you know,	でもこれって変なの、だって分かるでしょう、
They hadn't any feet.	牡蠣さんたちにはアンヨなかったものね。
Four other Oysters followed them,	また四つの牡蠣があとに続いたよ、
And yet another four;	それからまた四つ、
And thick and fast they came at last,	とうとうどんどん続々とやって来たよ、
And more, and more, and more--	つぎからつぎへと、つぎからつぎへと---
All hopping through the frothy waves,	泡立つ波間を跳ねてびょんびょんと、
And scrambling to the shore.	先を争って岸辺の方に登ってきたよ。

Walked on a mile or so,	一里かそこら歩いたよ、
And then they rested on a rock	それから岩に腰掛けたよ
Conveniently low:	格好の低いのにだよ。
And al lthe little Oysters stood	すると、可愛い牡蠣さんたちは立ってたよ
And waited in a row.	一列に待っていたんだよ。
'The time has come,' the Walrus said,	「時間だよ」とセイウチが言ったのさ、
'To talk of many things:	「いろんなことをお話するよ、
Of shoes---and ships-- and sealing wax--	お靴や--お舟や--封筒を閉じる蝋燭とか--
Of cabbages--and---kings---	キャベツや--それに--王さまや--
And why the sea is boiling hot---	それになぜ海が煮えたぎるように熱いのか--
And whether pigs have wings.'	それから豚さんには羽があるのかどうか。」
'But wait a bit,' the Oysters cried,	「でも少し待ってよ」と牡蠣たちは声をあげたよ、
'Before we have our chat;	「おしゃべりする前に、ぼくらのなかには
For some of us are out of breath,	息を切らしている者もいるんですよ、
And all of us are fat!'	それにぼくたち皆太っているんです！」
'No hurry!' said the Carpenter.	｢急ぐことはないさ！」と大工は言ったよ。
They thanked him much for that.	牡蠣さんたちは多いに感謝したものさ。
'A loaf of bread' the Walrus said,	「パンを一斤」とセイウチは言ったのさ、
'Is what we chiefly need:	「それだけあれば多いに結構さ。
Pepper and vinegar besides	他に胡椒に酢もあれば、
Are very good indeed---	本当に完璧なのさ---
Now, if you're ready, oysters dear,	さて、心の準備が整ったら、牡蠣さんたちや
We can begin to feed.'	お相伴するとしんぜよう。」
'But not on us!' the Oysters cried,	「でもぼくらを賞味しないでください！」と
Turning a little blue.	少し青ざめた牡蠣たちが言った。
'After such kindness, that would be	「あれほどご親切にして下さったのに、そんなこと
A dismal thing to do!'	ひどいじゃありませんか！」
'The night is fine,' the Walrus said.	「夜は素晴らしいな」とセイウチが言った。
'Do you admire the view?	「眺めが素晴らしいと思わないかね？」
'It was so kind of you to come!	「わざわざお出で頂きご恐縮さま！
And you are very nice!'	それにしても皆さん、美味しいですな！」
The Carpenter said nothing but	大工は黙っていたが、
'Cut us another slice.	「もう一切れ気ってくれ」とだけ言った。
I wish you were not quite so deaf---	「そんなに耳が遠くないといいのになぁ---
I've had to ask you twice!'	もう二度も頼んでるじゃないか！」
'It seems a shame,' the Walrus said	「恥ずかしいなぁ」とセイウチが言った
'To play them such a trick.	「こんな風に騙すなんて。
After we've brought them out so far,	こんなに遠くまで連れてきて、
And made them trot so quick!'	あんなにも速く走らせて！」
The Carptneter said nothing but	大工は何も言わずにいたが、
'The butter's spread too thick!'	「バター厚く塗りすぎだよ！」とだけ言った。
'I weep for you,' the Walrus said;	「きみたちのために泣くよ」とセイウチは言った、
I deeply sympathize.'	「同情しちまうな。」
With sobs and tears he sorted out	涙を流して泣きながら、
Those of the largest size,	一番大きいのを選り出したのさ、
Hodling his pocket-handkerchief	雨だれのように垂れる涙の両目に
Before his streaming eyes.	ハンカチを当てながらね。
'O Oysters,' said the Carpenter,	「ああ、牡蠣さんたち」と大工は言った、
'You've had a pleasant run!	「楽しいい一っ走りだったな！」
Shall we be trotting home again?'	「また、とことこ走って帰ろうか？」
But answer came there none---	が、返事は何も返ってこなかった---
And this was scarecely odd, because	でも、これは殆どおかしくはなかった、何故って
