Canto　I	第一編
The Trystyng	逢い引き
ONE winter night, at half-past nine,	ある冬の夜、九時半
Cold, tired, and cross, and muddy,	凍えて疲れ、不機嫌でむっつりさ
I had come home, too late to dine,	帰宅してもののまともな食事は無理な時間
And supper, with cigars and wine,	葉巻とワインつきの夕ご飯が
Was waiting in the study.	書斎でお待ちかねさ。
There was a strangeness in the room,	いつもとは違う部屋の雰囲気だった
And Something white and wavy	白くてひらひらするものがね
Was standing near me in the gloom---	薄暗闇のなかぼくの隣に立っていた
I took it for the carpet-broom	おっちょこちょいの下男が置き忘れた
Left by that careless slavey.	絨毯用の箒かと思ったのさ。
But presently the Thing began	でもすぐにそ奴ときたら
To shiver and to sneeze:	震えてくしゃみをしだしだよ
On which I said "Come, come, my man!	「さぁ、さぁ、お願いだから
That's most inconsiderate plan,	少しでも気づかってくれるなら
Less noise there, if you please!"	そうガサゴソしないでおくんなさいまし。
"I've caught a cold," the Thing replies,	「ここに着いたら早速ね」と抜かすのさ。
"Out there upon the landing."	「風邪を引いちゃいましたっすよ」だってさ。
I turned to look in some surprise.	吃驚して振りかえると
And there, before my very eyes,	眼の前に、何と
A little Ghost was standing!	ちびっこ幽霊さんが立っていたのさ。
He trembled when he caught my eye,	ぼくの眼と合うとブルッと震えてしまってさ
And got behind a chair.	椅子のうしろに隠れてしまったよ。
"How came you here," I said, "and why?	「どうしてここにいるんだい」と訊ねたのさ
I never saw a thing so shy.	こんなにおずおずしたやつに会うのは初めてさ。
Come out! Don't shiver there!"	さぁ、出ておいで！そこで震えてないで、さぁ！」
He said, "I'd gladly tell you how,	「悦んでお話させていただきましょうとも
And slso tell you why;	どうやって着いたのか、それに理由もつけまさぁ、
But " (here he gave a little bow)	じゃが」と言うと（ここでちょこんとお辞儀をしたんだよ）
"You're in so bad a temper now,	「今のところ貴方様はひどくご機嫌ななめでしょうから
You'd think it all alie.	何を言っても信じてはもらえますまい。
"And as to being in a fright,	「ところで、恐怖についてですがね
Allow me to remark	言わせてもらえればですが
That Ghosts have just as good a right,	ゴーストにだって本当のところ
In every way, to fear the light,	人間が暗闇を恐れるようにですね
As Men to fear the dark."	闇がどうしても怖いんですよ。」
"No, plea," said I, "can well excuse	「つべこべ言ったところでね
Such cowardice in you:	きみが臆病だっていう言訳にはならないよ、
For Ghosts can vsit when they choose,	幽霊は好き勝手に化けて出られんだからね
Whereas we Humans can't refuse	それなのに人間ときたら幽霊さんたちにね
To grant the interview."	邂逅するのを避けられないんだよ。」
He said, "A flutter of alarm	「ちょっとばかり警戒心が表されてもですね
Is not unnatural, is it?	変じゃないですからね、だんな。
I really feared you meant some harm:	危害をお加えになると本当に思ったんですけどね、
But, now I see that you are calm,	でも、もう落ち着かれたご様子ですからね
Let me explain my visit.	お訪ねした理由をお話させてくださいな。
"Houses are classed, I beg to state,	「ぶっちゃけた話、家という家はですな
According to the number	泊めることのできる幽霊の数がですよ
Of Ghosts that they accommodate:	決められているんですな
(The Tenant merely counts as weight,	（賃貸人は、石炭や他のがらくたもろともにですな
With Coals and other lumber).	単なる嵩としかみなされていないんですよ。）
"This is a 'one-ghost' house, and you,	「お宅はゴースト一人が定員なんでしてね、
When you arrived last summer,	お宅さまが夏にご到着されたときのにですな
May have remarked a Spectre who	ゴーストの仕事を全部一人でこなしてしまう
Was doing all that Ghosts can do	ご新居さんご歓迎の仕事という仕事をこなしてしまう
To welcome the new-comer.	栖屁駈他吾に気づかれたことでしょうな。
"In Villas this is always done---	「別荘ではこれが恒例でしてな
However cheaply rented:	超低価格で借りていてもですよ
For, though of course there's less of fun	何故って、そりゃ面白みに欠けますからな
When there is only room for one,	ゴースト一人に一部屋しかない場合でさえですな
Ghosts have to be contended.	満足しなけりゃならないからですよ。
"That Spectre left you on the Third---	「夏のゴーストは三日目には出て行ってますんですよ
Since then you've not been haunted:	それ以降はゴーストは出てませんて。
For, as he never sent us word,	何故って、伝言がありませんでしたからですよ
'Twas quite by accident we heard	誰か要るって風の知らせはですよ
That anyone was wanted.	全くの偶然に聞いたもんでして。
"A Spectre has first choice, by right,	「栖屁駈他吾に最優先権があるんですわ
In filling up a vacancy;	空いている家に入り込む権利じゃよ
Then Phantom, Goblin, Elf, and Sprite---	麩庵富夢、吾舞燐、絵瑠譜、須賦雷斗と続くんですわ
If all these fail them, they invite	このゴーストたちが皆、入りきらないときもあるんですわ
The nicest Ghoul that they can see.	そんときは一番感じが好い吾欧瑠を招くんじゃよ。
"The Spectre said the place was low,	「栖屁駈他吾の話ではここは垢抜けなくて、
And thet you kept bad wine:	おいてあるワインも不味くてな、
So, as a Phantom had to go,	そこで、麩庵富夢が行かなければって
And I was first, of course, you know,	拙者めにお鉢が廻ってきて、もちろん、お分かり頂けて
I couldn't well decline."	いるように、とても断れ切れなかったのでしてな。」
"No doubt," said I, "they settle who	「そんなところだろうともさ。送り込むのに
Was fittest to be sent:	誰が最適か決めたってわけだな
Yet still to choose a brat like you,	でも、４２歳の男の家に化けて出るのに
To haunt a man of forty-two,	きみのような青二才を選ぶとはな
Was no great compliment!"	お世辞の言いようもないな！」
"I'm not so young, Sir," he replied,	「私ゃ、それほどひよっ子じゃありませがね」と抜かして

In cavern by the water-side,	水際の洞窟なんかでもって
And other places that I've tried,	その他いろんな所でもって
I've had a lot of practice:	修行を積んでいるんでさ。
"But I have never taken yet	「でもこれまでのところまだちゃんとですな
A strict domestic part,	家のなかで試したことがないもんでしてな
And in my flurry I forget	それに慌てふためいていたためにですな
The Five Good Rules of Etiquette	暗記していなければならない肝心な
We have to know by heart."	儀礼第五箇条を度忘れしちまいましたんですな。」
My sympathies were warming fast	このか弱き御仁に対して
Towards the little fellow:	急に同情心がふつふつと沸きました
He was so utterly aghast	やっとお目当ての人を見つけたのに
At having found a Man at last,	こんなに取り乱してしまって
And looked so scared and yellow.	怖くて土気色の顔をしているのでした。
"At least," I said, "I'm glad to find	「まぁ、ゴーストが唐変木でないということだけでも
A Ghost is not a dumb thing!	分かったのは良しとしなければね！
But pray sit down: you'll feel inclined	そこで、もしその気ならということだけど
(If, like myself, you have not dined)	（もし、ぼく同様まだ食べていない場合ということだけど）
To take a snack of something.	何かつままないかな、一緒にね。
"Though, certainly, you don't appear	「実際のところ、どうぞ召し上がれと食べ物を
A thing to offer food to!	差し出すようには見えないだろうけどね！
And then I shall be glad to hear---	それでも、きみの何とかの五箇条というのを
If you will say them loud and clear---	よかったら大きな声で分かりやすく言うのを
The Rules that you allude to."	聞かせてもらえるならね。」
"Thanks" You shall hear them by and by.	「どうも。少しずつ五箇条については語らせてもらいますかな
This is a piece of luck!"	こ　りゃついてるよな！」
"What may I offer you?" said I.	「なにを召し上がりますか」と聞くぼく。
"Well, since you are so kind, I'll try	「では、ご親切に甘えさせて頂くといたしますかな
A little bit of duck.	鴨を少しだけお願い致したいものですな。
"One slice! And may I ask you for	「一切れだけ！それと肉汁をもう少しだけ
Another drop of gravy?"	頂いてもよろしいでしょうかな。」
I sat and looked aqt him in awe,	私は座ると畏れ入って見つめてしまった
For certainly I never saw	というのも、こんなに白っちゃけてひらひらした
A thing so white and wavy.	ものを見るのは初めてだったからかな。
And still he seemed to grow more white,	それでも、訪問者はますます白くなるようで
More vapoury, and wavier---	ますます消え入りそうで、ますます軽くなるようだった
Seen in the dim and flickering light,	薄暗いちらつく蝋燭の光のもとで
As he proceeded to recite	客は「行動原理と処世術」のお題目で
His "Maxims of Behaviour."	暗唱を始めたのだった。

CANTO 2
