|Fire started in the Nagasaki Prefectural Office.|
I went up on the roof of my company building and looked around. To my astonishment, my city had completely changed as far as I could see.
The roof of the Mitsubishi factory on the other side of the Nagasaki Port appeared to be brown in places though it was all black before. I soon understood that the roof tiles had been fallen apart and the clay underneath was exposed. Plumes of smoke were billowing everywhere. The Nagasaki Prefectural Office on the hill looked to be in very serious condition. It would get out of control, I thought, unless the fire was extinguished as soon as possible. In fact, the fire flared up and spread out in the blink of an eye.
The fire which started in the Prefectural Office spread all over and everything in the hilly area was burnt down. I could see a vast devastation expanding as far as to the districts of Bungo-machi, Naka-machi, Higashi-naka-machi and Uchi-naka-machi (each district).
The US Air Force flew over one after another, but none of us were running away any longer. We were prepared to accept our fate.
