Alex could fill striker's role, says Troussier
Japan coach Phillipe Troussier is looking to try Shimizu S-Pulse's Brazilian-born winger Alex
out as striker for the nation's upcoming games.
The World Cup co-hosts are currently undergoing their first national training of 2002 in Kagoshima,
and with options aplenty from the 41-man strong squad,
French coach Phillipe Troussier said
Alex's versatility will give the Japanese forward line an added attacking dimension.
"He has many strengths," said Troussier, "He can play on the left wing, but I expect to use him as a striker."
Alex received his Japanese citizenship in November last year,
and is part of an impressive S-Pulse squad that has performed well in Cup competitions.
Alex has played a stirring role on the left of the S-Pulse midfield in the club's tournament wins in recent years,
with the 1999 Asian Cup Winners' Cup victory the highlight of his career so far.
Alex is fully expected to make his international debut for Japan during the upcoming friendlies,
and with keen competition for his preferred role on the left coming from players
like Shinji Ono and Shunsuke Nakamura,
Alex said he will play anywhere as long as he is picked.
"I will only do my best in the position I am given," said the 1999 J.League Player of the Year.

2002年初の代表合宿が４１人の軍団で鹿児島で始まっているが、トルシエは「アレックスの多才な能力により
攻撃に新しい次元が生まれるだろう、彼にはいろんな能力がある。左サイドだけでなくストライカーとしても
期待したい」昨年11月に国籍も取得し、（主に左サイドで活躍し）エスパルスの大きな力になっている。
今後親善試合、真剣勝負などで彼は伸二や俊輔のように自分も得意とする左のスペシャリストとして大きく
期待される。しかし1999年最優秀選手である彼は"どこでもやる"という気持ちを次のように語っているのだ
