-- My Review of "heathen chemistry" --
Produced by the band and mixed by Mark 'Spike' Stent, the 12-song disc (there's a hidden uncredited instrumental at the end of the disc) is indeed a solid Oasis effort. The album opener (and the first single) "The Hindu Times" features the band's soaring chorus and Eastern-sounding guitar riff; sounds like the Beatles' Revolver-era. Like "Cigarettes & Alcohol," "Force Of Nature" is indeed a 1970s glam-rock set, reminiscent of T.Rex. As for "Hung In A Bad Place," the first song that Gem Archer wrote for Oasis, it is indeed a heavy rocker that gives Liam Gallagher something to fling around his demonic larynx. And second single "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" is, needless to say, the power ballad and destined to be a classic, epic Oasis song.
But the highlights of the album is actually provided by three songs written by Liam Gallagher. Especially, his Lennon-esque "Born On A Different Cloud" and "Songbird" may become classics. Of course, the band's primary songwriter is still Noel Gallagher, who wrote seven of the 12 tracks and sang on four; he is also in fine fettle on both rockers and ballads on this album. But I think the reason why Noel could give his best songs this time is because Noel could concentrate on his songwriting more by sharing the songwriting load and competing with his bandmates.
In any case, "Heathen Chemistry" is indeed the album people have been expecting Oasis to make. For the most part, in fact, this album features all the things we liked Oasis for in the first place. Mad for it!
