| Hot Spring Bath Onsen Watch the Recommended!!! mark! | |
Tama Center (Keio & Odakyu line) 2450 yen Natorium, cloride |
This onsen is nice, but rather simple for the price. It has standard luxury facilities for washing, and a decent sauna (w/television). It has natural volcanic spring water indoors (hot and cold). The outdoor water is from the same source; it is rustic and provides a relaxing environment. This onsen is located next to an amusement park - let the kids ride the roller coasters, while you and your better half relax and bask in the healing waters.(F.C.) |
Shmura-sakaue (Mita line subway) 800-1000yen natrium sodium Recommended!!! |
Very reasonable price for this facility that has a huge traditonal
Japanese garden of white sand with plant. Outside bath tub offers true onsen water that smells real and tasts salty. You should bring your own towel and pijama so that you can take a nap after or between onsen. Restaurant is self service, not expensive. |
2250yen natrium sodium |
This is an immitation of German onsen-Bad style. Toshimaen Niwanoyu is quite large, encompassing many facilities. The traditional-style onsen areas (separated by gender) offer standard scrub down showers, steam rooms, saunas, and optional massage rooms. The onsens themselves (with pools inside and outside) are quite nice, and contain rich mineral water from deep within the earth. In the middle of the facility is a large, bright, mixed gender (swimsuit required) hot tub pool area. On its periphery are rooms containing a small "dead sea" pool (very high salt content), and a floral-scented steam room. Outside is another smaller mixed-gender hot tub and a path leading to a Japanese-style garden, shaded by tall trees. Upstairs is a nice restaurant and rest area, where one may purchase food or drink (the purchase is scanned to the customer's locker key bracelet), or relax in comfortable t.v. chairs. Tatami sleeping rooms are also provided; quite relaxing, assuming nobody is snoring... Overall this is a very nice onsen, conveniently located in Nerima-ku on the Toei Oedo line. (C.S.) |
Tabayama Village (Yamanashi Prefecture) 600 yen sulfur |
Tabayama is a beautiful little village in the mountains. It is near west end of Tokio prefecture, less than 2 hours from Tokyo by car. The beauty of this area lies in a mountain lake that Tabayama is really close to. Tabayama is so small that the modern architecture of the Onsen in the middle of the city sticks out. The Onsen is beautifully located, accessible with a small hanging bridge over a little stream. A lot of wood and stone give the Onsen a nice, natural ambiance. Its definitely worth a visit. (F.G.) |
Tokyo Dome JR Suidobashi 2565 yen chloride strong salt hot spring |
Probably the finest spa in Tokyo. Located in the 5 floor in the middle of town, next to the Tokyo Dome. Luxury interior, beautiful big basins in various temperatures, and a nice outside area. Different sauna and steam rooms. An electronic bracelet will keep track with the extras you buy, from a quick vending machine drink to a full body cleaning massage. Quite expensive, but worth it when staying over night: paying a little more you can rest until the next morning. The Onzen provides you with a really good yukata and has a nice rest area. (F.G.) |
Hinohara Vollage Tokyo 800 yen alkalinity simplicity hot spring |
This onsen in Hinohara Village is surrounded by beautiful
mountains and forests and has been spared from tourists yet. Although it takes nearly two hours by car from Tokyo to Kazumano-yu it is worth to spend a day to discover this area's sights (e.g. Queen of the Cave). Finishing the day trip in this onsen is a good choice. Kazumano-yu offers clean indoor and outdoor facilites. Due to thesurrounding area this place has a very relaxing atmosphere.(Y.L) |
Keiou Nagayama (Keio Line) 2000 yen Recommended!!! |
This onsen is not only ver reasonably priced, but offers many top-notch facilities. Wash up in the standard luxury shower area then enter the natural rock saunas. Volcanic heated rooms with hot mineral rocks provide a healthy way to sweat out toxins and nourish the skin. If you need to cool down enter the salt-air room. Your skin will thank you. Next enter the onsen - you can choose between a nice green tea bath and the natural volcaninc sulpher water. I prefer the sulpher water, it is extremely healthy. (F.C.) |
Higashi-Yamatoshi (Seibu-Haijima line) 1200 yen Natorium, cloride, carbonic acid hydrogine |
"This pseudo-Romanesque onsen will get the job done for sure.
Thebuilding itself comes complete with a terracotta roof (of sorts), giving it at-a-glance a sightly more European feel (although you will still feel like you are in Japan to be sure). The natural volcanic baths, which are available both indoors and out, are really nice for the skin, and the indoor part even gives off a potent sizzle of electrolyzed bubbles to do you real nice... Near the outside bath, however, you may find an fine "herbal" steam room. If you are a happily ignorant gaijin such as myself you may even bask in the pleasant aroma of 4 different herbs free of charge! Otherwise it might cost a tad extra... That`s about it: a good little onsen with a Mediterranean twist. All for just \1000!"Ciao!@(F.C.) |
Chofu (Keio line) Natorium |
Jindaiji will be the other type of onsen where it is more simple. Though Jindaiji offers a nice natural environment. If it was at a different location, maybe this onsen may not be so attractive, but since the air was fresh here near to the jindaiji botanical garden, it has a slight charm. The onsen is at the open air and has well landscaped rocks and water falls. There are a few different types of water and it seemed like a nice place for relaxation. Only thing is that it can be too crowded. (T.L) |
Ocean deep water |
Heiwajima would be what I term the 4/5 star onsen again. It has many floors and many places for relaxation. It has a swimming pool, a gym, restaurant area and many places to rest and relax. There are 2 sections of hot bath with different types of water. (T.L.) |
Nagoya alkalinity simplicity hot spring |
The onsen had a relaxing atmosphere. It wasn't crowded at all. It was
spotlessly clean. The pools were divided according to temperature. There
was also a sauna room. There was the characteristic smell of sulphur present in the air. I have been told that sulphur is good for the skin so I was getting a skin treatment in the process too. I particularly enjoyed sitting in the outdoor section of the onsen specially after a soak. As soon I came into contact with the cool outdoor air, I'd break into a sweat. And so, I spent a few relaxing hours in this quaint onsen getting rid of my aches and pains. (S.S.) continuing |

This onsen has a ginseng tea bath, and nice massage bath facilities. A little bit more crowded, but nice nonetheless. |
