1919年12月18日イリノイ州シカゴ生れ。39年からプロの歌手としての活動に入り、 41年ジーン・クルーパのバンドに迎えられた。2年間クルーパの元で歌ったが、 ロイ・エルドリッジと一緒に行った吹込みが大ヒットして広く知られるようになった。 44〜45年はスタン・ケントンのバンドで歌い、再びクルーパのバンドに短期間 戻った後、一本立ちの歌手としてクラブ、レコーディングで大活躍。50年代に 人気は不動のものとなった。64年のヴァーヴ盤を最後にレコーディングから遠ざかり、 69年NYで第一線に復帰。73年、西海岸に移り活動を続けている。
