English Conversation Dojo Club, Hyakurenkan.

現在、各地にある、いわゆる「英会話喫茶」は、日頃、英会話を勉強している人々に会話の実地練習の場を与えるものとして機能しております。

The English Conversation Cafes in big cities like Tokyo or Osaka are working well as actual exercise places for the people who are studying English Conversation.

しかし、人々の中には、そのような場所に行くこと自体、躊躇し、勇気を必要とする方も多くおられるに違いありません。それは多くの日本人がそうなのですが、日本人同士、英語で話しをするということに一種の“照れ”を感じてしまうからなのではないでしょうか？

But, not a few people must to hesitate or to need the courage just to go into these places. As many Japanese often so, they may easily feel self-conscious when they talk with other Japanese in English.

本館は、そのような特に“照れ屋”な人が外国人と、あるいは日本人同士で、英語を話すことに慣れて頂くための鍛錬道場なのです。

Our Dojo is a training gymnasium for these people, especially who are bashful, will get used to talk with foreigners or other Japanese in English.

ここではレベルに関係なく、誰もが本当に英会話練習を楽しむことができます。

We can really enjoy conversation with many people in this Dojo, regardless of the language level of the person.

Hyakuren-kan was established in December, 2009.

当館は英会話を上達させたいと願う全ての方々のための鍛錬道場です。その基本理念は、「百錬自得」です。

Our Dojo is a training gymnasium for everybody who has a desire to improve their English conversation ability. Our basic principle or motto is "Hyakuren-jitoku" which means that we can really master the skills after hard training of so many times over.

ここは、いわゆる英会話を学習するための「教室」や「学校」等ではありません。勉強ではなく、鍛錬をする場所と考えています。集まった方同士のおしゃべりにより、自らの上達を目指して頂く場所です。従って、ここには、特別、先生といえる人はいないのですが、自分以外の全ての人が先生になり得るとの考えをとっています。剣聖宮本武蔵の「我以外皆我が師」の言葉のように！

Our Dojo is not a so called "class" or "school" for English conversation study. We think that this place is not for studying but for training. We aim our individual's improvement in English conversation by just speaking like sparrows. So, there are not any teachers here. But we think as the words of the honorable swordsmanship Miyamoto Musashi, that is, "Everyone except me should be able to become my teacher!"

しかし、出来るだけ多くの外国人にも参加して頂けるよう努めていますが、必ずしも英語のネイティブに拘わってはいません。その方が本当の英会話訓練になると考えるからです。

But we are trying as many people from other countries as possible will come to us. But, we think it is not necessarily better for a native speaker of English. To talk with various countries people makes us the really training of English conversation.

「百錬自得」という言葉は初めて目にする方もおられるかも知れませんが、その意味はお分かりになると思います。この言葉は、剣道や合気道等の武道の他、茶道・華道・日本舞踊等、ほとんどあらゆる日本の伝統的芸事の世界で使われている言葉です。

Even if you hear this word of "Hyakuren-jotoku" for the first time, you must understand the meaning easily. This word is often used in almost every traditional Japanese arts not only martial arts like Kendo, Aikido but also Sado (Tea Ceremony), Kado (Flower Arrangement) or Nihon-buyo (Classical Japanese Dance), and so on.

これまで皆さんは、学校を卒業された以降も、英語又は英会話をそれぞれの思い、やり方で勉強されてきたことと思います。しかし、英語・英会話は、高尚な英文学とは異なり、特別な学問ではないのですから、いわゆる勉強だけでは上手く出来るようにはならないと、当館は考えます。むしろ、武道やスポーツのような修練が必要だと思っています。

We think that you have been studying English or English conversation by your own ways after graduate your school. We think that you cannot improve your English conversation ability only by the so-called "study" because conversation is not special academic discipline like lofty literature. We believe that it is rather necessary to do exercise as like as the martial arts or sports.

普通、英会話学校では初級、中級、上級あるいはレベル１，２，３・・・等のクラス分けで勉強しています。最近まで当館長が語学留学していたニュージーランドの学校では１１段階にクラス分けがされていました。

In general, almost all conversation school has some grades of class, that is, Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced classes or level 1, 2, 3, …, and so on. The EF international language school in NZ that our Kantyo (the Director) had been going until recently had classes that were divided into 11th grades.

しかし、当館長が５０年以上も修行してきた剣道及び居合道の道場では、せいぜい少年部、一般部等くらいの区分しかなく、一般成人の部であれば、それこそ今日入門したばかりの超初心者から、剣道歴数十年のベテランの方までが、一緒に修行しています。

But the Kendo and Iaido Dojo where our Kantyo have been studying for more than 50 years has only two departments, that is, the "Boys and Girls Class" and the "Adults Class".

In Adults Class, many people from beginners who are permitted to enter today to experts with several decades experience are training all together.

そこでは、初心者は経験者から懇切丁寧な指導を頂くものの、それは頭で理解するところまでで、真の会得は、周りにいる上級者のそぶりを観察することと、それを見様見真似で、自分でやってみる体験によって実際に出来るようになります。

The beginners can know many skills in their mind after the detailed and in-depth explanation from a person with experience. But, to master skills completely is due to actual exercise in mimic advanced people around him.

また、上級者は、初心者が上手く出来ない状態を観察することにより、往々に、自分の技により磨きをかけるためのヒントが得られることがあるというメリットがあります。

And an experienced person can also gain various hints for his skills polish up from observing beginners faltering.

英会話学習には、このような「百錬自得」の修練的方法が必要で、かつ、極めて有用であると思っています。

We believe that the way of training -"Hyakuren-jitoku"- is very necessity because of its usefulness and effectiveness for study English conversation.

館長の名前は"Tamio"といいます。昭和22年(1947年)生まれの、いわゆる団塊の世代の真ん中の人です。長く東京霞ヶ関にある中央官庁に勤め、2008年3月に定年退職しました。

The name of Kantyo is "Tamio." He was born in1947 (Showa 22nd). He has been living in a mid baby-boom generation that occurred after the World War II. He had retired from a Central Government Office in Kasumi-ga-seki in Tokyo in 2008.

その後2008年6月から2009年3月まで、ニュージーランド人に剣道と居合道の指導を行うべく、オークランド市に滞在しました。

After that, he went to the New Zealand to teach Kendo and Iaido (Japanese martial arts) for New Zealanders. He had stayed at Auckland City from June, 2008 to March, 2009.

その間、昼間は、英語の勉強のため、当地のEF International Language Schoolに通いました。彼はレベル３から始めて５まで上達しました。しかし、館長の英会話力は、まだそんなに大した事はありません。

During stay in Auckland, in the daytime, he went to the EF International Language School to study English. He began in level 3 and reached at Level 5 in last. But his linguistic skill is not so excellent yet.

NZ滞在中、旧日本海軍の本物の零式艦上戦闘機（零戦）が全く無傷でオークランド博物館に展示されていることを知り、これの日本への返還について、たった一人で当博物館長に掛けあう等、返還運動を行いました。

In his staying in NZ, he earnestly worked only by himself about returning to Japan a Zero Fighter of Past Imperial Japanese Navy in the World War II which has been exhibiting in completely undamaged in Auckland Museum.

このように館長はなかなかユニークな人です。館長はこんな顔をしています。

道場は埼玉県川越市菅原町にあります。川越市の川越駅東口複合施設「クラッセ川越」の５階にある、川越市国際交流センター内です。東武東上線又はJR線「川越駅」からほど近い場所です。

It is in the Kawagoe International Center, on the 5th Floor of the "Klasse Kawagoe" bldg.

現在、会員は６０代のご婦人４名及び２名の紳士、２０代の男性及び女性各１名、並びに館長である私の計９名です。

The current membership of our Dojo is 9 in total that are 4 women and 2 gentlemen in their sixties, one male and one female in their twenties, and me as a Kantyo.

会員には熟年者が多いので、なんか老人クラブみたいな感じがしなくもありませんが、しかし、歳は重ねても、皆さん、向学心は極めて旺盛で、気は若く、知的で魅力的な方ばかりです。

You may feel that it looks a Senior Citizens' Club because most members are elderly. But, in spite of their ages all of them have a strong desire for learning, a young mind and the intellectuality. Anyway, they are all very fascinating people.

何よりも、この風変わりなWebsiteを見て、「面白そう！」と思って下さった方ばかりなので、お人柄はとても良い方ばかりです。

Above all else, all of them is a good-natured person because they are people who thought "It sounds like so fun!" to see this a little bit eccentric website.

館長として、このクラブはこれからだんだん素晴らしい会に育ってゆくような予感がしております。熟年者のパワーを感じます。また、若い人の参加も大いに期待しております。(2010.07.20記す。)

As a Kantyo, I have a hunch that our Dojo will evolve to become the good club. I feel the enough power of seasoned citizens. I look forward to join of many young people in our Dojo, too. (July 20, 2010)
