Hello!
I am an enthusiastic grower of Hydrangeas and I live in Japan.
I am an amateur, with no degrees in horticulture, and my only connection to the business
is that I've been a good customer for the horticulture trade for the last 25 years!
I am particularly fond of H. involucrata, so I've chosen "involucrater" as my pen name.
I like variegated Hydrangea macrophyllas and some orchids (Phalenopsis, etc.), too.
English is not my native language, so if you find mistakes in my writings,
I would appreciate your letting me know at : hirano3554@yahoo.co.jp.
In Japanese, H. involucrata is called "Tama-Ajisai" and is translated literally as 'ball-hydrangea',
a reference to the shape of the flower bud (size:695x520),
The latin name given to them by Siebold, 'involucrata', is a reference to the curling of the bracts.
I live an eastern prefecture of Metropolitan Tokyo,
not far from the Izu Peninsula and the Bohsoh Peninsula, the native habitat of the Japanese hydrangeas.
My 'PINKY' involucrata is 'Mihara Kokonoe' (f. plenissima Tuyama). (size:695x520)
Background photo of this page is 'Gyokudanka' (f. hortensis Ohwi). (size:695x520)
Top of my wish-list involucrata is 'Tama-Kanzashi' (scientific name known). (size:640x468)

My small garden is located in a zone: Honshu-Is./Pacific-Ocean side of Japan.
Ave. temp.: Aug(27C), Feb(5C = the lowest temp. rarely goes below than 0C).
More rain in the summer (Jun-Jul: 200-250mm/month),
relatively dry in the winter (Dec-Feb: 10-50mm/month) .
