Maniwa Nenryu
Maniwa Nenryu is one of sect of Kendo, and the roots of Maniwa Nenryu is Nenryu.

Nenryu was thought out by Souma Shiro Yoshimoto (Jinen; name after priest) lived at Souma, Oushu (Current; Fukushima prefecture) about 650 yeas ago, and the concept of Nenryu is Go-te-hissyou (protect and kill enemy after the enemy move for attack), and is Kendo for self-defense purpose.
Higuchi-ke (familly) The origin of Higuchi familly is Higuchi Jiro Kanemitsu, one of four key Busyo (samurai) for Kiso Yoshinaka.

Higuchi Matashichiro Teiji, the 17th generation of Higuchi familly, was named the 8th of Nenryu by Tomomatsu Gian Ujimune, the 7th of Nenryu at Febrary Tensho 19 (1591). Teiji arranged Nenryu not only using Katana (sword) but also using Naginata (sword with long handle), Yari (spear) for more powerfull military arts, and Maniwa Nenryu was passed generation to generation in Higuchi familly during 400 years (650 years from original Nenryu).

Pupil The most famous pupil of Maniwa Nenryu is Horibe Yasubei who is one of the member of Akoh Roushi. Horibe Yasubei was Nakayama Yasubei before got married with one of daughter of Horibe fammiry at Akoh, and Yasubei fought Kawai Matagoro and 35 samurais they killed Yasubei's uncle at Takata-no-baba. Then, Nakayama Yasubei won his 1st revenge. After Yasubei got married, his lord Asano Takumi-no-kami tryed to kill Kira Kohzuke-no-suke at Matsu-no-rohka in Edo castle, then Asano suicided by the order of Tokugawa Shogunate. 47 Akoh roushi, samurai but no lord, includes Horibe yasubei attacked Kira Kouzuke-no-suke's house where were protected more than 100 samurais three years later, and killed Kira. It was Yasbei's 2nd revenge. 47 Akoh rohshi suicided at Sengakuji temple later.
Kagami-biraki Kagami-biraki is the special opening seremony of training of military arts (Kendoh, Jyudoh, Kyudoh, ....) for the first training day in the year.

In case of Maniwa Nenryu, Kagami-biraki is held at Kohshikan Dohjyo on the 3rd sunday in January.

Access From Tokyo to Takasaki station JR Jyoetsu/Nagano Shinkansen requires 50-60 minutes from Tokyo station to Takasaki station.
From Takasaki station to Kohshikan Dohjyo, Maniwa Joshin Dentetsu railway requires 20 minutes, costs 470 yen from Takasaki station to Maniwa station, then walk about 10 minutes for Kohshikan Dohjyo at Higuchi-ke.
