in a battle.
His brother, on his death bed, said to the emperor : " We are descendants
of the Goddess of the Sun, and therefore, we must not have fougfht in the

The emperor retreated and went around to the Kii Peninsula and landed
there and advanced through the mountains of Kumano, which is the

From the leaflet of the Shrine
The Kashihara-jungu Shrine is situated at thesoutherneast of the Mr.Unebi
-yama where the first human emperor was crowned as the emperor,
according to the chronicles Kojiki and Nihonshoki.
At the middle of the Meiji Era, according to the increased public opinion
in favor of the foundation of the shrine in honor of the great achievements
of the first emperor Jinmu, the emperor Meiji donated the the building
"Kashikodokoro" of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto and the spirit of the first
emperor Jinmu was enshrined there on April 2nd 1890.
In 1940, one year before the Japanese participation in the World War II
with the Pearl Hobor attack, the 2,600th anniversary of the foundation of
the Japanese nation was held with much pomp. On that occation, the
area of the Kashihara sanctuary was extended and the main hall "Honden"
was repaired and the reverance halls "Haiden" and other buildings of the
shrine were built.
The majestic Kashihara-jingu Shrine is situated in the forest of the 495,500
square meter sanctuary.
The mausoleum is a grave where the remains of of a great person, deified,
is buried, and the shrine is not a grave. It is a place where the spirit of a great
person is enshrined. Many foreigners misunderstand this fact.
About the site of the grave of the emperor Jinmu, there has been a lot of

controversy. At the end of the Edo period, however, a mound in Okubo-cho,
Kashiwara city, was determined as a tomb of the first emperor Jinmu.
The mound was repaired at the end of the Edo Period, and during the Meiji
era, the santuary was extended.
In 1967, February 11th became "Kenkoku Kinenbi" , The Nation's Foundation
Day, a national holiday. Before the World War II, the same day was
celebrated with the name of "Kigen Setsu" but it was not celebrated during
two decades, as the name has a smack of being nationalistic.
Kamu-yamato Iware-hiko-no-mikoto, a great grand son of Niigi-no-mikoto,
descendant of the Sun, thought that it is difficult to govern the nation in the
Imperial Palace, in the southernmost province of Hyûga, Kyushu Island and
decided to advance towards the East., according to the Chronicles Kojiki and
Nihon Shoki. He left the province of Hyûga on 5th October 667 B.C., and
arrived at Kashihara on February 11th 660 B.C and founded the Japanese
Nation as the first emperor Jinmu, where in 1890, the Kashihara Shrine was
Thus, the history of human beings and not of the gods began. But, his life
was full of mythological stories.
