Recently, the link on some 3c556B adapters does not work unless the computer is booted on Windows and then on Linux. Apparently this happens only on some versions of this chip. Donald Becker's driver (which is not the driver in the Linux kernel) has a correction for this problem. This correction should be incorporated later in the driver in the Linux kernel.

If your laptop has a 3Com internal Ethernet/Modem adapter and you want to know which one you have look at the output of "cat /proc/pci" and see the name and/or the "Device id" of your Ethernet controller. For instance, the adapter below is a 3c556:
