Deep Breathing (2003/07/20)

If possible, everyone must want to write and everyone must want to show what he or she wrote whatever the theme of writing may be. In the introduction of Writing with Power, the author Peter Elbow has made such comments. Together with his first book Writing without Teachers, Writing with Power recommends us to conduct what is called "freewriting exercises."

Though I won't explain the details of "freewriting" here, the point I want to emphasize is that everyone more or less has the desire to write and to be read by his or her readers. The very motif of my newly launched home page is derived from this insight. In my self-recognition I also have the desire to write and to get my own (hopefully "sincere") readers who can give me the positive and encouraging comments.

In this home page the main contents will consist of my diary and essays, though both are interchangeable in one way or another. And also I plan to include both English and Japanese writings. As living in abroad, I want both my friends here and in Japan to read my writings and of course for those who are familiar with both languages I want them to read all my writings hopefully, though I am just afraid that they may need their patience to read through my somewhat wordy materials.

Lastly I should explain the title of my home page -- why it is named "Deep Breathing." Of course the primary intention is to color this home page with my hope that I wish I could write as if I breathe. Breathing is the ultimately basic activity of us human being. Without breathing, we can never survive. Likewise, I wish I could be the one who cannot survive without writing. I want to make writing one of the basic activities like breathing. Don't you think it is interesting?

Writing is breathing and at the same time writing is thinking. When we are daydreaming, we tend to believe that we think thoroughly. But we don't. Only when we commit ourselves to writing, we are able to "think" more deeply and can get a substantial insight. At least in my case only through writing I can clarify what I am thinking and what I try to say and articulate.

Writing can develop your insights. Thus, to make myself growing I want to make writing one of my basic activities like breathing and in so doing "thinking" would be one of my basic ones, too. Write well and think well as if you breathe well and deeply.
