About Centurion Card

The American Express Centurion Card has been issued on December 3, 2002 in Japan. As the 6th country where Centurion card is available. (7th if we count IDC: International Dollar Card)  This page introduces what is the Centurion card, with comparing annual fees and benefits by different countries issued to consider Japanese version.

There used to be the highest Amex charge card, The Platinum card. After the Centurion card launch on December 3, 2002, The highest level has been replaced. This black sleek looking card is being called as "Centurion" "Black Amex" or "Black Card." The name is from its precious roman warrior on the Amex Logo.

This card is Invitation Only in each countries, no exceptions so far.

The Centurion card has been introduced in United Kingdom in 1999, not its origin in United States. Later, US, Germany, Hong Kong... are followed. However, UK has slightly different cardface which is equipped with IC chip. At the first launch, UK Centurion members received specially designed IC card reader looks like calculator. If they insert the Centurion card, they can check paid amount or Membership Rewards points. There is also the indication of Charter Member by script font. This sign is only available for the charter members, of course. Please see UK Centurion pictures below.

For receiving the invitation to the Centurion member, your biggest questions are: How should I perform spending? How much should I charge? Why not me? etc... bunch of people are anticipating to be invited around the world. M-Site is gathering the information from the members who succeeded or even lost, then providing such useful info for our Forum members.

Before you decided to enroll M-Site Forum, let us introduce the history of Centurion card release as a basic knowledge.

Following is the launch of Centurion card by chronological order.

2004  1st Quarter   Australia

2004  3rd Quarter  France, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Sweden..........15th October

The above are the Centurion available countries so far.

It was a great surprise Amex introduced Centurion cards in 5 European countries on October 15, 2004. And the card they introduced are made with rare metal, titanium, not a cheap plastic. This titanium metal card has been tested in Germany first, then European Centurion cards are now in titanium - UK and US will be also replacing to this titanium version in the future. However, no decision has been made for Japanese Centurion.

There were another shocking issue besides the 5 countries simultaneous launch.

The European 5 newbies are more than twice expensive compare to Germany. Now you can be ealized, the annual fee for the Centurion cards are getting higher and higher when it's re-introduced. US started with $1,000 but now Amex asks $2,500 for new members. Old members are still paying at $1,000 but the newly invited members should pay 2.5X higher.

Only US Amex announced the threshold amount for the Centurion invitation is at $150,000. No official announcement has been given for the rest of countries including Japan.

Hong Kong Centurion card's annual fee has been raised from 9,800.00HKD to 19,800.00HKD.

About Centurion Invitation

The invitation, welcome package itself, differs country by country - designs and materials.

Only the similarity is: Sent an actual card(s) in a Black Box. Amex Japan sent just one main card, but another regional Amex did 2 cards as the main and the associated one.

* Please note: Sending the actual black card is for the very first members in each country. The second lot invitation is not coming with the card(s), but an enrollment (application) form.

Centurion Benefits

Lots of people envies Centurion cards' perks, especially the higher status on the numbers of hotel stayers' programs (FSPs). Japanese Centurion card supports the following FSP.

1. Starwood Preferred Guest Platinum

2. Hyatt Goldpassport Diamond

3. Hilton HHonors Gold VIP

These three are supported. In another countries, FSP benefits are available for Platinum level members, but it doesn't come with Japanese Platinum members unfortunately. Since Japanese Platinum card member fee is relatively more expensive, we are quite sure Japanese members are highly anticipating FSP perks.

World's 450 airport lounge accessibility is also coming with Centurion card.

4. Priority Pass Card

All these FSPs and Priority Pass memberships are for both main member and authorized members. Hyatt Gold Passport only available for the main member though.

Priority pass has three level memberships as shown below. For detailed info, please see here.

Some of the Platinum card issued countries offer this Priority Pass benefits. This is one of the most popular, major benefits for Platinum members too. However, this benefit is only available for the main users.

No Priority Pass benefit for Japanese Platinum members, neither.

This persk is for both Centurion and Platinum cardmembers. You may enter Northwest Airlines' World Club or Continental Airlines' President Club. Requires a boarding pass though.

The "amenity" may vary per the hotels or years you stay. Those are typically free ride from/to the airport, lunch or dinner for two, afternoon tea for two, etc. depends on anticipating hotels.

The anticipating hotels and properties are changing frequently, thus Amex sends the members an FHR Directory every year.

To receive these benefits, cardmember should book the hotel through American Express Travel Services - CTS (Centurion Travel Service), BCT (Business Centurion Travel), PTS (Platinum Travel Service) or BPT (Business Platinum Travel). These perks will be applied when you book on FHR rates. FHR rates are typically cheaper than rack rate and it's usually very affordable.

Centurion SLH Directory 2004

 About Centurion Magazine

Each country has their own members only magazine. The most famous one is Centurion Magazine.

UK, German, Swiss, Hong Kong, ICC (International Currency Cards) issue Centurion Magazines, and US / Japan issue Departures Magazines.

Departures Magazine is not designed for Centurion members but also for Platinum members. Online version of Departures Magazine is available in US, and this website requires first 6 digit to enter - like shown above.

US Departures Magazine

Departures Magazine is finally available in Japan since 2004. It started from March, and will be calendar quarterly. Inside articles will be partially translated from US versions, plus Japanese regional and original articles. Esquire Magazine Japan is the editor of Japanese version.

Even in Asian countries, Journal-International takes care of the publishing if the documents are in English. If Japan speaks English, they should be publishing Centurion Magazine for us. However, Departures Magazines are available for those 5 new European countries: France, Italy, The Netherlands, Sweden and Spain. The numbers of copies in each country is as follows.

European region also has Platinum Card Magazines, and those are also quarterly publish.

In the States, as shown above, Departures Magazine covers both Centurion and Platinum members. However, as per Amex introduced in their news release, No Name Magazine is available for US Centurion members from September 13, 2004.

No Name Magazine for US Centurion Card Members

In the above articles, we briefly told about the requirements for the invitation. Recently, in the States, they say Amex sent invitation to whom spent $100,000 per a year. At that moment, the threshold was relatively low.

However, by receiving number of phone calls and inquiries over the Internet, US Amex officially disclosed the threshold for the incitation. Formerly annual spending is at $100,000 or higher, but now it's hopping to $250,000. Yes, a quarter million dollars per a year! Therefore, the requirements are:

  1. Having the Platinum card

  2. Spending $250,000 a year

These two are the most important requirements. After the disclosure, the annual fee is also raised from $1,000 to $2,500. Original members who invited in old good days are still paying only $1,000.

The first invited members didn't have to be a Platinum member. Those who being an Amex loyal customers for a long time, were invited even they were a Green card members. (Those members are called as Charter Members.) However, outside of US, these are not the essential elements for the invitation. There are bunch of rumors, say T&E expenditure is important, say usage of overseas are needed, etc. but no one knows. One obvious point wherever the cardmember is, it is essential to be a Platinum member for receiving the Centurion invitation. Therefore if someone downgraded his/her card from Platinum, then the chance will be gone.

By the way. Who is the youngest Centurion card primary holder? Perhaps Mr. Tyler Dikman is. He received his black card when he was 17. This News has been introduced over the Internet. There will be a concern whether Amex seriously issue a primary card to a person under18, but this might be a good evidence Amex is different from another credit card issuers. The important is someone's actual, raw power, not a level of income or age.

Changing the subject - Japanese Centurion came with highest Diamond Membership level of Hyatt Gold Passport. But this great perk has been terminated by December 23, 2004

Originally, this program was called as "American Express Centurion Program." Probably Amex pays some to Hyatt to attach Diamond membership to the Centurion holders. This is still our guess, but it wouldn't be profitable for both parties when they gather the information: how frequently Centurion members are using this perk, and decided to be terminated.

They say the original term of this American Express Centurion Program was 7 years. There is a story some Centurion holders inquired the future plans when this term has been expired. Then Gold Passport replied to such member that the original rule - 25 stays or 50 nights are required - would be applied. The unique point of this program is: it's not automatic status upgrade. Centurion member must stay at least once a year at anticipating Gold Passport hotels with point-earning rate. This is incredibly easy and helpful for Centurion members to keep the highest status - just one night stay instead of 25 stays or accumulated 50 nights.

We don't have any actual data how many Centurion members took this perk or how frequently stayed. But we can easily guess the numbers were disappointedly lower than they expected. There are too many impressive hotel offers for Centurion users, and they are not enchanted this semi-automatic Diamond membership. Compare to this Hyatt offer, SPG-Platinum or Hilton-HHonors-Gold VIP are complementary, hence the member are more interested in these offers. These outstanding benefits, which release Centurion members from the FSP restrictions, will be changing the availabilities by members behavior, and the members' preferred perks and benefits will be remaining and adding, we guess and we hope.

About Crystal Card

There are various rumors over the Internet regarding Crystal Card or Clear Card. The rumor says the Crystal Card is higher than Centurion.

These rumors are coming from 3 cards, and 3 colors - Clear/Crystal, White or Ebony. Clear or Crystal cards are the most popular rumors, but these are based on Blue by Amex. The Blue from US and UK Amex are equipped with Smart Chip, and MULTIOS operating system has been installed at the first stage. Now it has been changed to Sun Microsystems' Java. And because of numbers of troubles, there are various versions and colors - including clear or translucent white on Amex Blue cards. This gave that strange rumors we expect.

The second rumor White supposed to be by the card from Amex Private Bank (PB). They issue shining white card with Roman Centurion logo on it, and thus the rumor has been started.

And the last one - Ebony came from the real card named Amex Ebony Card. However this Ebony card has been ended by the introduction of Centurion card. The original Ebony cards were designed for limited number of rich people, and this was the test trial of current Black Card.

Therefore, we at M-site understand there is no such Crystal Card by Amex because of the following reasons.

  1. American Express should announce news release if they issue a new product. But nothing has been made so far. Even Centurion card has been announced on the web.
  2. The cardface- centric Amex must mention all anticipating merchants about a new card designs. No information has been made.
  3. The recent Ebony card is the prototype of the black Centurion card. Therefore the Centurion card is the highest product from Amex.
  4. Amex Private Banking account holders have White cards. The person who saw that cards misunderstood and release the rumors, we expect.
  5. Most of these rumors of Crystal Card are in Japan. Less rumors overseas. If the Crystal is really exists, such card must be released outside of Japan and the rumors must be from overseas.
  6. Numbers of Amex cards in US or UK are switched or newly introduced with transparent or translucent colors. Less knowledgeable card users got fooled by such new designs.

These are the reasons we are negative about the existence of Amex Crystal. We can't say 100% no, but the above reasons are telling the truth, we think. Card fooled idiots or dream chasers are just telling about their wish. Thus Amex Centurion, the Black Card is the current highest product from American Express which they officially announced. Although there were the trial case - the Ebony card, but the final decision about this rumor is, up to you of course.

We found the web page regarding International Currency Card (ICC) Centurion Card. This page is explaining Centurion Benefits, and even application form for Centurion card is available. Japanese residents cannot receive ICC Centurion, by the way.

¡¡

ICC-Europe/Africa has two products - Dollar Card and Euro Card. ICC also has Asia Pacific,  Europe Africa, and Latin America regional cards. Currently Asia Pacific only offers Platinum card thus Europe/Africa region is the only issuer of Centurion card.

The Centurion logo on the 2005 FHR Directory has been changed a bit.

Compare to 2004, it is obvious. Also. 2004 was gray but 2005 got silver in the rear. World map index has been added on the 2005 version  conveniently.

In 2005, 36 hotels have been added.

As you may know, in the rear, Centurion Directory has "I CENT," Platinum Directory has "I PLAT" indication. FHR Diretories are being issued as follows.

  1. US Centurion FHR Directory

  2. US Business Centurion FHR Directory

  3. International Centurion FHR Directory

  4. US Platinum FHR Directory

Have you been noticed by this sign I CENT or I PLAT?

The contact info for US Centurion and Platinum are hiding. As shown above, US Centurion and Platinum have their own Directories, and the Business versions are the same situation. Another countries' Centurion and Platinum members are receiving International versions (shown as 3 and 6). To identify the versions, I CENT and I PLAT identification is thus essential.

SLH also got tiny change - just one. 2004 had silver colored Centurion logo on the cover, but it's missing on 2005. ... and both Centurion and Platinum cards are shown inside.

from SLH 2005

Taiwan PTS number is missing on SLH

Is Taiwan really the next Black card issuing country? Where will be adding?? Some say the next will be Singapore, but...

Departures Magazine introduces some offers by its country basis. German version comes with Centurion/Platinum News like these.

¡¡

US Centurion changed its invitation offering criteria.

As per shown above, recently, if Platinum member spent over $150,000 then Centurion can be offered. From May 1, 2005, this threshold raised at $250,000. This news can be read at Forbes.com. Furthermore, the additional card for the authorized users cost $1,500 each. This means, it costs Four Grand for the primary card holder plus his/her spouse. It is obvious US Centurion is now exceptionally expensive, but we have to see what will happen in the other regions.

US Departures Magazine

* This information has been given by M-Site Forum Member. Appreciated.

Although Japanese Departures Magazines are getting thicker and thicker, US versions are various - sometimes it's thick and sometimes disappointingly thin. Also basically the US version is monthly basis. This magazine is designed for Platinum and Centurion members.

No wonder it's in English, of course. inside is filled with tons of ads, especially luxurious info is taking place - i.e. Hotels, Private Jets, Jewelries, Cars, etc...

Although Japanese version of Departures Magazine started as quarterly, now it's bimonthly and receiving more ads and articles, better inside. The paper quality is, as usual, Japanese version is much higher quality.

Update: There are several changes on Departures and Centurion Magazines by Journal-International.

Numbers of copies keep increasing. Especially on Departures Magazine, the number is increasing by receiving Platinum members. (?)

Numbers of Copies Published in Europe

The above chart is already old. The actual, current numbers are much more. If you compare with year-old numbers, you may be impressed. Swiss is the smallest numbers and Centurion members are really rare in that country you may be noticed.

Numbers of Copies Published in Asia Pacific

Japanese numbers are not shown because Journal-International is not in charge. IDC Platinum members are only at 1,500 in Asia Pacific.

Demographics in Europe

The most interesting data is this European subscribers' demographics. It doesn't cover completely, but lots of situation can be shown. For example, French Platinum members are 55 at average, which is relatively older than the rest of countries, or the income of UK Centurion members are 416,000 pounds, which is outstanding from the others. You may be realized that 27 - 30% of readers are Centurion members amongst the Platinum + Centurion members. This indicates, most of the countries have same rate of Centurion holders. Also, gender of the primary card holders are 80% male. Incomes are over 100K US dollars and 40+ age. Outstanding Centurion members' transaction is 10 times higher than the rest of cardmembers.

Unfortunately, Esquire Japan, who publishes Japanese version of Departures Magazine, doesn't disclose this type of info. However, it is obvious there are more Platinum card members for these couple of years. Now approximately 40,000 Personal members plus Business Platinum members are subscribing Departures. ALso there are numbers of Japanese Centurion members thus another countries' Centurion members can't transfer the status to Japan.

The most important news for you guys will be: When Amex Japan will resume submitting the Centurion invitation? We will introduce updates in members-only M-Site Forum if we've got any.

¡Ê23,September,2005)

US CENTURION WEBSITE

We continuously introducing Centurion Websites info here, but some details will be shown again.

We updated and showed two pix on September 23, 2005. These are from UK web site we guess. well, let's talk about US site first. It will be easier for you if we show the actual graphics, so did we. Voila!

This is the top page of US Centurion Website Top Page. Maybe the first time for you? It's very similar to the Platinum page...

One of the strongest US Centurion Card benefit is, FFP. 3 of elite level FFPs are bundled: Continental OnePass Gold Elite, Delta Air Lines SkyMiles Gold Medallion, US Airways Dividend Miles Gold Preferred.

3 FSP elite memberships are bundled too. Hilton HHonors Gold VIP, Prioriy Club Rewards Platinum Elite, SPG-Platinum. There used to be another one - Hyatt GP-Diamond, but this perks AX685 has been terminated by worldwide basis, thus no region has this benefit any more.

Also, US Centurion ONLY has special benefit for SPG-Platinum. We disclose this information inside of members-only area.

Furthermore, US Centurion comes with above 3 hotel services. The offer from Mandarin Oriental Hotels are coming with all Centurions worldwide. Although the benefit at Ritz-Carlton Hotels are US Centurion only, Ritz-Carlton considers another countries' Centurion members and offer special rates and benefits too. Ritz-Carlton's AXC Code is very famous. There are another Codes are available at Ritz-Carlton but those details are informed at M-Site Forum.

The introduction to FHR. Looks same as US Platinum's hotel search schreen.

Most different page will be this Centurion Program's jet charter page. US Centurion has 6 partners as follows.

Jet charter program comes with numbers of perks, like triple MR points offer.

Although the perks of FFP and FSP are very strong benefit and attracting people, The concierge service at US Centurion must be the true and best Centurion service ever. Seeking a rare items, find the best and appropriate gifts for loved ones, etc. for busy Centurion members. Ticket reservations, hard-to-get tables for popular restaurants and charters aircrafts or choppers. A certain news introduced that Amex arranged an impressive delivery of engage rings to the couple: a diver came out from the deep sea and brought the ring to the future bride. Such exceptional, outstanding services are the only and most for the Centurion members, significantly different from the rest.

Currently each regional Centurion service has its own shopVIP program, but US Centurion's unique Shopping Program is the real VIP service. welcome gift at the highest-end stores, lounge access and personal counselors help you to find items you wish to have, and points, of course.

In Japan, a new service called "Stress Free" has been introduced for New Green Card. One of the perk is 50% off of rental cell phone. US Centurion or some other countries offer free rental phones with discount rates. Affordable priced overseas cell phones are also available for jet setters. Such service must be the real Stress Free, isn't it?

The partners shown above - stores, airlines, supermarkets, gas stands, etc. - everyday purchase can earn  double points. US Platinum members can receive this benefit. In Japan, compare to this, the promotion period is limited. These double points offer for everyday-use must be the most attractive benefit for the customers, we think.

Hope you oversaw these US Centurion benefits with fun.

UK CENTURION WEBSITE

Besides US website, UK also has their web. We can show you some.

This might be a first look to you... cannot login though. It will be available from the end of September 2005.

We inform the URL for browsing this for M-Site members-only Forum. We will update when it comes accessible.

Did you know the web site called Centurion Wine Club?

Amex Sweden operates this. You may be able to find this by the keywords "Centurion Wine Club" at the search engines. This is an official Centurion page, and the email address for Centurion Lifestyle Service is linked as well.

They also have Platinum Wine Club too, by the way.

The contents are same as Centurion Wine Club. Brief introduction can be browed at here.
Above Centurion/Platinum Wine Club URLs are also listed in M-Site Recommended Links.

UK CENTURION Website

As of October 3, 2005, UK Centurion website has been opened. When you login, the above page will be shown. It's similar to US Centurion page, but the Centurion members only offers, like hotel programs, are very attractive. These US and UK sites will be the good references for the rest of countries to open their local Centurion web sites.

Centurion Titanium Card

26,January,2007

In Japan, Centurion Titanium Card has been issued for the primary card members since December 2006. Titanium cards will be sent to all of primary users by the end of January, 2007.

Overseas countries issue titanium cards from the beginning, and for primary, additional and supplemental users. This Japanese style - issuing main, AC and titanium - 3 cards to the primary member, is very inefficient. Therefore, in the future, this will be controversial - unifying like another countries or keep this situation because of the compliance to Japanese appropriately systems such as railway tickets or ATM machines.

There are bunch of documents and pictures regarding this Titanium card on someone's blogs or websites, as well as overseas Centurion Titanium Card pictures. Here at M-Site, we provide detailed, clear pictures of the titanium card hereby.

Centurion Titanium Card

Because it's made with a titanium metal, it feels cool (temperature cool) and heavy. Standard plastic card weight around 4 grams but this Centurion Titanium Card tripled the weight - over 12gram. The letter "7" is unusually angled. The embossed letters and numbers have its distinct feeling, which is significantly different from the usual plastic cards.

Left bottom of the Card

As shown above, the card edges are not completely flat but slanted. Rounded edges are for better handling.

 Left up of the Card

Even on the titanium metal material, Amex Logo is clearly printed on it.

Rear of the Card

As shown above, although it's embossed, the rear is completely flat. Signature panel has the card number and this part his not flat. (we removed the card number on this picture for security reasons) Because of this numbering, it is a bit difficult to sign on it.

Close up of the Rear

This part supposed to be attached another titanium metal plate. Therefore, it gives flat surface thus can print essential information such as phone numbers.

AmEx Logo in the Rear

As known as "Blue Box," Amex logo is not colored only on this Titanium Card.

6.Private Clubs

It¡Çs not rude to stare at the paintings on the walls of Kee Club in downtown Hong Kong. However, it is rude to ask if the Picasso is original. Of course it is. As is the furniture by Le Corbusier, Jacobsen and van der Rohe. Their collection of cognac and scotch is equally rare.

But if the management is discerning about their artwork and spirits, they¡Çre equally selective about the guests they allow. It is, after all, a private member¡Çs club. The fees alone ensure that very few new members ever join. Just as it is across all of Asia¡Çs top clubs.

Your Centurion Card, however, will get you access to the following private clubs¡§
