He therefore began to dream of creating the "Décorations des Nymphéas", for which he built a huge and unsightly studio from 1914 to 1915, at the top of the garden, on the left. His gigantic task was begun in 1916 and, after various ups and downs, ended with a magnificent series of canvases being donated to France on 12th April 1922. In January and July 1923, he underwent operations on hie right eye.
