It hardly matters that a TV movie remake (also based on Paul Gallico's original 1969 source novel) was made less than a year before, because Petersen's version is far more spectacular, with shocking digital effects, massive sets, amazing stunt-work and enough fire and water to fill five movies with challenging worst-case scenarios. Once again, the plot concerns the capsizing (by a massive "rogue wave") of a state-of-the-art luxury liner, and the struggle of a small group of survivors (including Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, and Richard Dreyfuss) to climb upwards, to the ship's hull, in their treacherous quest for a safe exit. Unfortunately, most of these characters are two-dimensional and under-developed (especially when compared to the 1972 film's all-star cast), and the unimaginative screenplay by Mark Protosevich (reportedly worked on by several uncredited writers) subjects them to a rote series of obstacles that grow increasingly routine and repetitious, not to mention contrived and illogical. Again, it hardly matters, because Petersen's handling of non-stop action is so slick and professional that Poseidon gets by on sheer adrenaline. The capsizing scenes are nothing less than awesome, with some effects so real (and so horrifying) that younger and more sensitive viewers may need to look away. And while it lacks the engaging humanity of the 1972 version, Poseidon is certainly never boring. O.K. so this film has a ton of cliches in it and the characters are very paper thin and transparent and after a while when the film ends it becomes forgettable but it still manages to be entertaining, at a certain point you wouldn't care if their wasn't any character development but its interesting to see who lives and who dies in the film and some of the stunts and special fx were quite impresive. It's not like this film was awful or anything cause I have seen alot worst blockbuster films out there but it could have been alot better, the film is about a large cruise ship that during a new years eve celebration gets hit by a rogue wave which eventualy turns the whole ship upside down so its up to a bunch of characters like Josh Lucas, a fire fighter (Kurt Russell), his daughter (Emmy Rosum), the annoying Lucky Larry (Kevin Dillon), a gay architect (Richard Dreyfuss) and others to lead the way to safety before the whole ship capsizes and sinks deep down in the ocean. If you can suspend your belief then you might enjoy this but it depends I only thought it was halfway decent and good enough to watch once I'll give it 2.5/5 stars. The original POSEIDON ADVENTURE was one of my childhood favourite movies, which I had on video and watched many times, it was big in our house! And I'm happy to say the long-awaited Wolfgang Petersen remake was well worth seeing on the big screen! My heart missed a beat when I saw the name IRWIN ALLEN PRODUCTIONS and also SHEILA ALLEN, Irwin's widow, as executive producer at the start during the intro - awesome CGI shots leading into the jogging-on-the-deck scene! When I saw those names I thought YEEESSSS! Irwin Allen has made some great movies(THE LOST WORLD(1960), ONE HOUR TO DOOMSDAY, the original Poseidon of course, THE TOWERING INFERNO, FLOOD, HANGING BY A THREAD, FIRE!), and also some stinkers(BEYOND THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, THE NIGHT THE BRIDGE FELL DOWN, CAVE-IN, WHEN TIME RAN OUT, THE SWARM) and lest we forget, LOST IN SPACE, LAND OF THE GIANTS, THE TIME TUNNEL et al for TV . . .but at least the baddies were hugely entertaining in a guilty pleasure kind of way that I rate them well. But I digress. Like many disaster movies, the usual nuts line up for the New Year's Eve cruise. When the POSEIDON capsizes due to a rogue wave(?!), a compulsive career gambler played by JOSH LUCAS decides to climb up to the propellor shafts against the orders of the captain who instructs those that survived the capsizing to remain in the main dancehall. Joing JOsh are an ex NY mayor and fireman Robert Ramsay played by KURT RUSSELL, a jilted gay man(cashing in on BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN methinks) played by RICHARD DREYFUS!!!!(Mr Holland's Opus, Close Encounters of the Third Kind), the fireman's daughter played by the lovely EMMY ROSSUM(Phantom of the Opera, The Day After Tomorrow) who looked great wet(hee), and many more. You get the rest. Some live, some die. As this motley group climbs up the ship through a surreal and inverted world, you get to see some awesome setpieces and suspenseful action scenes - the aircon shaft scene was well and truly claustrophobic and the elevator/burning oil sequence was brilliantly excecuted bringing back fond memories of the original. The ballast tanks flooding was good and also like the original, anyone remember Stella Stevens swimming in her panties? You get a snatch of this as well. Of course, with every disaster movie you get an annoying kid, the one here was no exception. Again, I refer to lots of disaster movies of the 1970s like TOWERING INFERNO, CASSANDRA CROSSING(clock this one, this is fun), EARTHQUAKE . . . the annoying kid cliche makes the experience complete! The ending was truer to Paul Gallico's novel on which this is based than the original too, and again this was well executed. Overall, this remake is genuinely gripping in places, boasts some eye-popping SFX and excellent production design and cinematography. Oh, one moret hing, Black Eyed Peas fans will get a kick out of Stacey Ferguson as the ballroom singer on the doomed cruise! RECOMMENDED!!! | | | | | | | | | | | |  Mob Defies Democracy / 2006-06-16
A ship capsizes. The Captain orders the passengers to stay calm and wait till rescue arrives. A small group of passengers decide to take matters into their own hands and look for an escape. Essentially this mob defies authority putting the lives of other passengers at great risk. Who assigned this mob to take authority? This is an allegorical tale synonymous to taking the constitution and defying its principals and flaunty those would defend the constitution in the process. The mob waves their own flag to that end. This film makes a mockery of law and order and promotes the mob rule mentality that seems pervasive in our society. It asks the viewer to bend the law to suit their special interests like opening boarders to illegal aliens and turning a blind eye. This film's pretext is ludicrous and plays upon the better judgment of the viewer seeking that evasive weak moment to have one go along for this supposed adventure. This is not my kind of adventure.

POSEIDON seems like one of Wolfgang Petersen's lesser efforts. It has nowhere near the character development or intensity of AIR FORCE ONE or DAS BOOT. The main character and hero of the piece is Josh Lucas (he got top billing). Lucas really has no screen presence in my opinion. He truly lacks that charismatic quality to qualify as a leading man and is much better suited to character roles such as exemplified by his performance in A BEAUTIFUL MIND. In POSEIDON Lucas truly is not a very good hero and in fact is something of a cad and a heel that never quite redeems himself. Lucas seems unable or unwilling to shake his annoying cocky attitude. Kurt Russell definitely has a certain admirable and likeable screen presence and is better suited for the role of the leading man hero. If you take one look at Kurt you know he can back up anything he says he can do in that department. The script unfortunately constantly refers to him as this overbearing dad who somehow has never even been able to cut it even in public office. This is unfortunate for Kurt, the film and the audience because we really want to root for someone in this film. Given this awkward role, Kurt does have his moment of pathos and one can only reflect with anguish about his career that should have been kinder and more rewarding for his great talents as an actor. The rest of the cast trying to escape just goes through the motions as a bunch of simpering and whimpering flock of sheep. That's the problem with this film. In the original there was a sense of purpose to the group of escaping passengers trying to survive. Their emotions and temperaments were characterized with a peculiar camaraderie comprised of harmony and discord but still they retained a unified purpose of survival. The original was an impressive maritime adventure especially bolstered by John Williams' haunting score conjuring up images and fears of the unknown perils that the vast and mysterious oceans still hold in our imaginations.

This is edge-of-your-seat entertainment of the highest order. When a super sized luxury ocean liner capsizes from a rogue wave a group of individuals decide the only way out is to go up deck by deck till they can find a hatch (if there is one) in the hull and escape. As the water level rises quickly, explosions abound and steel structures come crashing down all around this group races against time to make it out to safety. The pace is non-stop and the deadly perils coming from every angle are nerve racking. Despite being a remake this is a good action film that is very entertaining and never let's up. I really enjoyed it.

1972年の海洋パニック大作 『ポセイドン・アドベンチャー』 のリメイク。北大西洋を航海していた豪華クルーズ船 "ポセイドン" の乗客たちは、新年を祝おうと着飾って大広間に集まっていた。しかし、突然高さ50メートル近い大波がポセイドンを襲い、船は転覆の一歩手前の状態に。海水が窓を突き破って押し寄せる混乱の中、船内は灯りが消えて暗黒の混乱状態と化す。生き残った数百名の乗員・乗客に、ブラッドフォード船長（アンドレ・ブロウアー）は大広間に集まって救援を待つよう指示するが、プロの賭博師ディラン（ジョシュ・ルーカス）は独力で助かる道を探そうとする。そこに娘を探すロバート（カート・ラッセル）、9歳の子供とその母らが加わり、ディランはリーダーとして脱出を目指すことになる。
