The venerable action star is visibly growing older now, but he's got a quiet, simmering quality here that perfectly suits his role as Jack Stanfield, Vice President of security at a large Seattle bank that's recently upgraded to a state-of-the-art computer security system (resulting in conspicuous Dell product placement throughout the film). Jack's the only one who can safely crack the system, so he's targeted by a would-be robber (Paul Bettany) whose jittery crew of thugs and hackers kidnaps Jack's wife (Sideways star Virginia Madsen), daughter, and young son, threatening to kill them if Jack doesn't transfer $100 million into the robber's secret offshore account. Like Bruce Willis in 2005's Hostage, Ford rises above the film's familiar generic trappings, and British director Richard Loncraine maintains a low-key escalation of tension that keeps Firewall on track toward a routine but satisfying conclusion. Supporting roles for Alan Arkin, Robert Forster and Robert Patrick add little to the film's turnabout plotting, but fans of Mary Lynn Rajskub (better known as ace computer nerd "Chloe" on the hit series 24) will enjoy her performance here as a loyal secretary who factors into Stanfield's bid to outsmart his captors. Firewall may not be an instant Ford classic like The Fugitive, but it's comparable to Ford's 2000 thriller What Lies Beneath in terms of overall intelligence and crowd-pleasing suspense. --Jeff Shannon | | | | | | | | | Firewall : 現地ハリウッド市民の評価 : 英語批評版 : Native Evaluation | | | | | An Awesome Harrison Ford Movie With A Great Villian / 2006-02-27
FIREWALL Was a great movie. The plot was basic, but Harrison's Performance and Paul Bettany's Villian were awesome characters. This movie is definatley worth seeing and is worth buying when it comes out on DVD. | | | | | | | | | | | | Firewall is fun while it lasts / 2006-02-24
Can a middle-aged computer security expert outwit a bunch of tech-savvy crooks who are holding his family hostage and want him to hack into his bank's mainframe to steal a lot of money? And can he save his family and the dog too while he's at it? Sure he can, if he's Harrison Ford. Yes, the same guy who played Han Solo in the "Star Wars" series and the whip-cracking Indiana Jones in those three movies by Steven Spielberg. Ably directed by Briton Richard Loncraine, the man responsible for the romantic comedy "Wimbledon", "Firewall" marks the return of Ford as an action star after a long gap. His last such outing was the dismal "Hollywood Homicide". Ford is computer security specialist Jack Stanfield, whose world comes crashing down one rainy evening as a gang of criminals led by the suave and nasty Bill Cox (Paul Bettany) takes his family - wife Beth (Virginia Madsen) and two kids (Carly Schroeder and Jimmy Bennett) - hostage and asks him to steal $100 million from the bank he works for. As the goons monitor his every move with all sorts of fancy gadgets, Stanfield has to go to bank and try to hack into the computers to get the money. And to make things tougher, the bank's just been taken over and Stanfield no longer has much access to its complete computer network. Like most other modern action thrillers, "Firewall" is loaded with clichテゥs - the crooks have all kinds of hi-tech gizmos that allow them to snoop on Stanfield, there is the obligatory failed escape by the family, a nasty goon who doesn't like the kids and a sensitive goon who does like them, and the villain is a cool blonde Englishman. But on the plus side, director Loncraine's pacing is just fine and Ford, Madsen and Bettany as well as the supporting cast of Robert Patrick, Robert Forster and Alan Arkin are great in their roles, even if they don't really have much to do in terms of acting. Sometimes though, Loncraine tries too hard to be hip, throwing in hi-tech touches like loads of grainy footage shot by webcams and having the hero using his daughter's iPod for a nifty bit of computer hacking! "Firewall" will never be ranked alongside Ford's classic action thrillers like "Patriot Games" or "Air Force One", but it's a fun ride while it lasts.

We open with Jack Stanfield (Harrison Ford), a big bank's software security expert. He has a wife (Virginia Madsen), two kids, nice house.... you get the idea. In comes the villian (Paul Bettany) and his band of thugs to try to use Ford to rob the bank. Pretty simple, huh? No, not in the least... The story is a great one in that it is smart, well-paced, and truly suspenseful. I was on the edge of my seat for nearly the entirety of the film. Also, you really can't predict where this one is headed at times, which is such a great achievement in a thriller today. But what really makes this movie is the acting. Harrison Ford's return to the silver screen is a triumphant one. He delivers a fantastic performance of an innocent man wronged. Sound familiar? Yeah, but who cares? This is HARRISON FORD, folks! He's arguably the greatest action hero in cinema history and one of the best actors of all time. So what if he's already brilliantly played similar parts in "The Fugitive," "Air Force One," and "Clear and Present Danger?" The point is that they're only similar parts. Ford's character in Firewall is different from all of those, but different in such subtle ways that he still creates such an inspiring, believable hero that we all can root for. This is really such a testament to what a great actor Harrison Ford really is. With every great hero, you need a great villian. Paul Bettany gives us just that. He creates a villian with such depth, but yet still so sinister. I don't think I've ever hated a character in any film more than I hated Bettany's in Firewall. He's an up and coming star and such a great talent. We'll definitely be seeing more of him in the near future.... Altogether, Firewall is a fresh, well-crafted film that offers two hours of solid entertainment. I'm not sure what film some of the critics went to see, but the Firewall I saw was a darn fine film and one I'm looking forward to seeing again. | | | | | | | | | | | | Firewall.....uuuuuugggggghhhhh......... / 2006-02-22
I think this was prabably the worst movie I have ever seen with Harrison Ford in it. It was supposed to be a thriller, right? Well, it wasn't. I was slouching down in my chair the whole time, waiting for the so-called suspensful scenes, but no! there wasn't any! But I think the thing that got me the most was the ending. It sucked. It's sooooo predictable! After a short battle he kills the bad guy, and it shows them all walking down the path together, happy but hurt (at least Harrison Ford (Jack Stanfeld) was), and then they end the movie! I sat there, stunned. How is he going to explain to the police about all of the people he killed, why he was acting so strangly, why he fired 2 of his top people, and why he beat up his superior?!?!?!?!?!?! I warn you all NOT to see this movie. I hope he's only waming up for Indiana Jones 4 =P | | | | | | | | | | | | A movie done by rote / 2006-02-21
There really isn't anything original or surprising in this entire movie. It provides by the numbers, rote suspense. It doesn't exactly INSULT the intelligence of the audience...but for the most part, it doesn't exactly require a careful following of the plot twists either. But it's a Harrison Ford film, and there was a time when that alone was cause of celebration. However, it's been a long time since there was a good Ford movie, and FIREWALL ain't it either. Even in some of his poorer films of the past though, he was at least entertaining to watch. Thinking back on HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE, which was a real mess of a film...constant changes in tone, loose pacing, Josh Harnett...Ford at least was amusing and his charisma helped a lot. We brought our own good feelings about him to the film. In FIREWALL, it's tough to like him. Ford himself seems tired and disinterested...he's going through the motions. And if we don't care about him, it's hard to care about his hastily sketched family either. And if we don't care about them...well, it's just hard to care much about the film. There are some bright spots to keep this from being a totally forgettable film. Paul Bettany makes a nice villain overall. The character is written in very generic fashion, but Bettany, who is normally SO likeable (WIMBLEDON, MASTER AND COMMANDER) makes his intelligent bad-guy neatly creepy. Sadly, during the final scenes of the film, all pretense that this guy is cool-as-a-cumcumber go right out the window and he becomes totally generic. Not Bettany's fault...the script essentially abandons him. Also, Mary Lynn Rajskub essentially reprises her role from TV's "24," but it's such a fun character that she's very welcome in FIREWALL. The always wonderful Alan Arkin, as well as Robert Patrick and Robert Forster are all pretty much wasted in very generic roles. They add a little class to the movie, but it's just a sheen that brings no extra substance. Virginia Madsen is also a very welcome presence, but the part of "the wife" will hardly be in her list of most memorable roles. The action sequences are tame. It's mostly one of those movies where things are one close call after another. For awhile, Ford is simply trying to let someone know he's in trouble without the bad-guys knowing he's telling anyone, and those moments offer the most fun of the film. They are small-scale and believable...we can almost feel him thinking of what to do next...refusing to believe he's been outsmarted. Later, when the plot thickens, it becomes more unbelievable and losing its tenuous grounding in reality. So, I will continue my wait for a Harrison Ford movie worth seeing...you should wait too, rather than seeing FIREWALL. |
