By loosely adapting Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda children's books of the 1960s, Oscar®-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility) has also given herself the plum role of Nanny McPhee, who can tame even the most unruly children with a tap of her magic walking stick. Her latest challenge is the bratty brood of a recent widower Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), who's under pressure to find a new wife or lose his much-needed allowance from wealthy Aunt Adelaide (a tailor-made role for Angela Lansbury). His love for scullery maid Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald) remains unspoken as he wincingly woos the eagerly merry widow Mrs. Quickly (Celia Imrie), but Brown's raucous rugrats have a plan to make things right, especially after they've come under the benevolent influence of Nanny McPhee, whose peculiar brand of discipline works wonders for everyone involved. Both quintessentially British and universally appealing, this wildly colorful comedy (thanks to a bold palette of costume and production design) was capably directed by Kirk Jones, whose appreciation for comic actors was equally apparent in his critically acclaimed 1998 comedy Waking Ned Devine. With just a hint of darkness to offset the whimsy, Nanny McPhee offers a splendid match of director, cast and material, guaranteed to please Wallace & Gromit fans and anyone else with a taste for British zaniness. --Jeff Shannon | | | | | | | | | Nanny McPhee : 現地ハリウッド市民の評価 : 英語批評版 : Native Evaluation | | | | | It Sometimes Takes A Miracle... / 2006-02-03
Appearances can be deceiving. This delightful film was based on children's stories about Nurse Matilda, and adapted by Emma Thompson who was Nanny McPhee, a magical gnome-like creature. She'd arrived on the scene after the seven unruly children had successfully run off the 17th nannie from the agency, Nannys of Distinction. This was no ordinary British household, as there was a cook and scullery maid named Evangelina. Cedric Brown is caught between finding another wife or losing his brood. He seems to be driven to distraction by this possibility and spends a lot of time talking to his dead wife's empty chair. He never spends time with the children who are in constant turmoil because of their mother's death. Simon's the eldest and is the precocious leader of all their mischief, played beautifully by Thomas Sangster, who could be the twin for Brett. When the "government nanny" with a magic walking stick enters their lives, she has five lessons to teach the family and explains, "I cannot interfere with affairs of the heart." At first, her strange appearance and strict discipline are like a bad dream, as she tames the clever children. After they learn to trust her, her appearance starts to change for the better as her ugliness fades away in phases. Nanny teaches them to adapt to circumstances in order to stay together as a family. The servant is transformed into an acceptable stepmother. She'd grown to love the children but Simon had told her "You're paid to like us and that doesn't count." At the outdoor garden wedding, it could have been a scene from Bennie Hill's outrageousness as the "well-behaved and groomed children" start their hijinks again, this time to save their father from a domestic life of doom. The prospective stepmother is worse than Cinderella's and, after they do what has to be done to stay together as a family ("that's all that matters"), the story evolves into a fairy-tale ending. Snow in August transforms Evangelina, played by Kelly Macdonald, into a princess bride. Love reigns supreme as Nanny McPhee makes her exit, like Nurse Matilda would do, to work her magic for other motherless children in crisis. | | | | | | | | | | | | magical... / 2006-02-03
I have just returned from seeing this wonderful movie, and I must say that it is more than worth the trip! The colorful backgrounds are so much fun to watch throughout the entire movie ~ so storybook-like. The adult actors are superb, the children are delightful. Colin Firth is, as always, perfect; Emma Thompson is her usual impeccable self; Angela Lansbury is, of course, superb. There is nothing about this movie that I didn't like except that it was too short ~ I hated to see it end. When it comes out on DVD, I have every intention of buying it the first day! I highly recommend this one... | | | | | | | | | | | | Entertaining / 2006-02-01
I found this film to be very refreshing after all that has been in the theatres lately. I am 72 years young and found it very funny and yet gave you a very good feeling when it was over, no sex, gore or monsters...very good for me and my family. | | | | | | | | | | | | A Spoonful of Lemon Juice / 2006-02-01
Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson, who also wrote the screenplay) arrives at Casa Brown: wide of hip, warted of face, thick of hips, full of bosom, uni of brow and snaggle of tooth...not a second too late as widower Cedric Brown (a hapless but cheery Colin Firth) has just lost his 17th. Nanny and the Nanny Placement Center have closed its doors to him and his rowdy 7 children. McPhee seemingly sent from Nanny Heaven uses a combination of magic and common sense to teach and coach all of the Brown children plus Mr. Brown himself into being the best people they can be. "Nanny McPhee" owes a lot both psychologically and physically to movies as varied as "Willie Wonka" and, dare I say this: "Mary Poppins." And in a performance that I would have to call bizarrely yet subtly understated, Emma Thompson chews up the scenery with a damask napkin on her lap and a bone china teacup in her hand. "Nanny McPhee" is fun and the production is almost psychedelic in its use of big bold colors: the Brown entryway is a burst of red, white and blue and Mr. Brown's home office is chartreuse and fuchsia....a feast for the eyes.

From the Kate Greenaway costumes to the dreamlike colors of the Victorian-horror of a house to Emma Thompson's dark and witty script, this was a delight. Thompson was wonderful (literally) as the formidable Nanny and Colin Firth's delivery had me rolling. Derek Jacobi was fun to watch as well. The scenery and the score were lovely. It might be a bit much for very young children but older kids should love it. One of the few times I've like the film better than the books. | |
