Accepting this challenge after the triumphant Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, director Ang Lee has created an ambitious film, based on the Marvel comic created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, that succeeds as a cautionary tale about mad science and traumatized children coping with legacies of pain. That's the Hulk's problem: After accidental exposure to gamma radiation, scientist Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) turns into the huge, green, and indestructible Hulk when provoked, and repressed childhood memories fuel his fury. Hobbled by the obligatory "origin story" (to acquaint neophytes with the character's Jekyll-and-Hyde-ish fate), there's room for little else in a sluggish film that struggles to reconcile Lee's stylistic flair (evident in his visual interpretation of comic-book technique) with the razzle-dazzle of a megabudget franchise. What's good is good (Jennifer Connelly essentially echoes her role from A Beautiful Mind, and Nick Nolte is righteously tormented as Banner's father), but the movie's schizoid intentions remain largely unclear. --Jeff Shannon | | | | | | | | | Hulk : 現地ハリウッド市民の評価 : 英語批評版 : Native Evaluation | | | | | This is actually a good movie / 2005-12-26
I just watched this movie yesterday--because I liked Ang Lee's latest _Brokeback Mountain_. I have another motivation: people have been saying that _The Hulk_ is the one of the worst movies ever made, so I wanted to see how bad that was. Then it turned out that this movie is not only entertaining, but also thoughtful. This movie, I personally believe, elevated the status of the comic to something meaningful, which means that "ordinary" people like us can relate; it touches on a dark desire that we want (?) to resist. It seems that "desire" is Ang Lee's theme; if you look at his filmography, it is quite consistent. Every movie of his deals with the conflicts as well as unexpected heroism one's desire creates. | | | | | | | | | | | | The Incredible Waste-of-time / 2005-12-23
The Hulk is boring, was boring and always will be boring. Yesterday, my mom got me this and said I may like this. A day later (A.K.A Today) I watched it. Dude, I fast-forwarded so much. This movie tries to be something it isn't and ends up being boring. The movie tries to be action-packed and it gets boring, it tried to be spooky but it ends up getting boring AND laughable, it tries being funny but gets boring and tiresome, then it tries to be emotional and it gets not only boring but also plain mind-numbingly dull. Then it tries to be boring and it finally achieves something it tried. It gets BORING. I am a big fan of comic book movies with my favourites being Spider-Man 1 & 2, Batman Begins, Batman Forever, Men In Black 2 and my all-time favourite: Fantastic Four. In Fantastic Four, the heroes, Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben, became the FF like... when 10 minutes passed. The Hulk on the other hand makes his appearance, HALFWAY THROUGH the movie. I agree with another reviewer, why not just have an actor (NOT ERIC BANA) put on a Hulk costume like Michael Chikclis did with the Thing in FF. Also, I agree that Eric Bana's acting in this movie is HORRIBLE!!! Toby Maguire did not do a good enough job in Spider-Man, (He acted like he was bored) Eric Bana acts like in a first grade dragged into Charlie's Angels: The Movie and being forced to act one of Sam Rockwell's henchmen's stunt double, being pounded brainlessly by Drew Barrymore in wires, then being thrown into a hospital that Hard Boiled: The Remake would be filmed in the excact same time he was there. In short: The acting is awfully awful. The end is a bit confusing but suggests a sequel and here is some advice for it. 1. More action 2. Less talking 3. Less emotion 4. Make it more like Spider-Man/Fantastic Four 5. Get FF director Tim Story to direct 6. Make it LESS BORING!!! If you have been so unlocky to se this movie, I am deeply sorry for you. NOBODY should see this. This movie is an pure Abomination. Speaking of Abomination, make him the next villain. Do not buy, rent if you are curious. | | | | | | | | | | | | just way too much... / 2005-12-20
this movie stinks why did they twist it up so much? could've been good but...nope. only one word:HORRIBLE!!!!also they should've done hulk in a costume like thing. | | | | | | | | | | | | A Good Movie, not a Great Movie. / 2005-12-13
Ang Lee directed this film as if he was impressed with himself, impressed with his split screens and editing, impressed with his "artistry." In this blender of pretention, the Hulk I grew up on manages to peak through. Okay, we do have to creep through scenes of heavy handed angst and repression. Still, once the Hulk breaks out of his clothes, the fun begins! The CGI Hulk is at times totally convincing, at other times plastic looking. Too bad the effects wizards weren't more consistent. There are still plenty of great effects, many "Hulk Smash" scenes, and the soundtrack is incredible!! The concluding battle is too brief, but at least this movie has more "jaw dropping" moments than the average super-hero film. I thought paraphrasing MST3K would be appropriate, because if ever a movie belonged among their catalogue. . . . Where do I begin? To say this film was a disappointment would be the understatement of the century. Fourty-five minutes into the movie, I was still waiting for it to start. A lot of the other reviewers have echoed my own complaints, so I'll just limit my own observations to the following: 1. Ang Lee was the wrong director for this film -- by his own admission according to an internet news report shortly after the film was released. You can't rely too heavily on the Greek Tragedy elements in an S/F piece, and that's what happened here. It needed an experienced comic book or S/F director such as Brian Singer or even Stephen Sommers. 2. Eric Bana was completely wrong for the lead. But that is the fault of a Hollywood too obsessed with good-looking leading men. Bana was too tall, to handsome, and far too young (I wish the original rumor of Steve Buscemi had been true). 3. Why oh why didn't someone call Peter David to write the script? If anyone could have saved it, it was him. 4. Jennifer Connelly tried hard to save it, but there just wasn't much to work with. Well, that's it in a nutshell. If you haven't seen this movie, don't bother. The original TV series is better. If you have seen this film, I pity you and share your pain. | |
