While taking the original film's suspenseful first act and expanding it into an 87-minute cat-and-mouse game, screenwriter Jake Wade Wall adds a few clever updates involving cellphones and home-security services, as well as the maze-like menace of a lavish modern home that serves as the setting for mayhem when cute teenager Jill (Camilla Belle, in the role originated by Carol Kane) takes on a babysitting job that she may live to regret. Someone is stalking her in the big, expensive glass palace that her employers call home (a splendid set designed by Jon Gary Steele), and that creepy voice on the phone (belonging to Lance Henriksen, master of doom-laden threat) should've been her first clue to grab the pair of terrified kids she's supposed to be protecting and leave the house ASAP. But no, the script, the overwrought score, and the uninspired direction of Simon West (Con-Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) insist that poor Jill be put through a Halloween-like night from hell, complete with a black cat as an omen of nasty things to come. Kudos to Wall and West for attempting to generate horror through suggestion (by keeping the homicidal stalker mostly off-screen), but let's face it: the original film is hardly a classic (its TV-movie sequel, When a Stranger Calls Back, is considerably better), and the remake takes too long to yield minimal rewards. Maybe Jill should've just unplugged the phone. --Jeff Shannon | | | | | | | | | When a Stranger Calls : 現地ハリウッド市民の評価 : 英語批評版 : Native Evaluation | | | | | A good rental / 2006-02-27
This is a pretty good movie as far as horror films go. As the movie progresses it uses some old fashion techniques a few too many times to scare the audience. The result? A movie that is not more than a descent rental. The only downfall to waiting to rent this movie is that the scare tactics will not work near as well on a small television. Now the upsides to this movie. It is scary. I don't mean Nightmare on Elm Street scary, I mean suspenseful scary. The suspense in this movie definently adds to the overall value of the moments of horror. Overall this movie is a good rental for people who love horror movies, but a must-see for those who don't watch this kind of movie much. | | | | | | | | | | | | Awesome / 2006-02-27
I've never seen any of the other movies, so of course I cant compare them. But I went with my boyfriend, cousin, and my 14 year old sister. We all thought it was a great movie. My cousin and I jumped and screamed, but my sister jumped a few times. I'm 21 and my cousin is 16. I was just reading the reviews and thought I'd add my own. Plus I do want to see the old ones of course so I can compare. | | | | | | | | | | | | A Boring Horror Movie That Didn't Scare Me In The Least / 2006-02-25
"When a Stranger Calls" involves a teen girl named Jill (Camilla Belle) who is babysitting for a wealthy family in her hometown of Fernwood, Colorado. Shortly after arriving, Jill begins to receive a series of creepy phone calls from an anonymous male. Instead of just taking the kids and leaving, like any sensible person would do, she proceeds to explore the house and get ever more frightened. Finally, the man shows up and makes a rather weak attempt to attack Jill. But the guy is such a wimp that Jill actually manages to get the best of him and run out the front door just as the police are arriving. I know this is just a horror movie and I certainly wasn't expecting "Citizen Kane". But, wow, this movie was absolutley terrible. It was not only implausible and idiotic. But, worst of all, it was quite boring and not the least bit scary. Jill was a shallow, annoying teenybopper and the constant phone calls were more irritating than suspenseful. The bottom line is that this silly flick was a yawner from beginning to end. Don't waste your time. | | | | | | | | | | | | THE BEST MOVIE / 2006-02-25
This movie was sooo good. It was really scary though. I had my eyes closed for at least half of it. Also, the audience was screaming, again, for at least half of the movie. This movie was 100% horror. I wouldn't recomend it to people who are little, and people who are going to be babysitting in the near future. I'm not kidding, this movie was the scariest and by far the BEST MOVIE EVER. | | | | | | | | | | | | I don't know 2 short / 2006-02-24
