Having proven his comic-book savvy with the original Darkman, director Sam Raimi brings ample energy and enthusiasm to Spidey's origin story, nicely establishing high-school nebbish Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) as a brainy outcast who reacts with appropriate euphoria--and well-tempered maturity--when a "super-spider" bite transforms him into the amazingly agile, web-shooting Spider-Man. That's all well and good, and so is Kirsten Dunst as Parker's girl-next-door sweetheart. Where Spider-Man falls short is in its hyperactive CGI action sequences, which play like a video game instead of the gravity-defying exploits of a flesh-and-blood superhero. Willem Dafoe is perfectly cast as Spidey's schizoid nemesis, the Green Goblin, and the movie's a lot of fun overall. It's no match for Superman and Batman in bringing a beloved character to the screen, but it places a respectable third. --Jeff Shannon | | | | | | | | | Spider-Man : 現地ハリウッド市民の評価 : 英語批評版 : Native Evaluation | | | | | The best of the superhero cinematic experience. `Spiderman',`Fantastic Four', and `Daredevil' make a very interesting trio of superhero movies, especially as they are, all three of them, based on a Marvel Comics character. To my mind, they exemplify the three levels of quality of `watchable' superhero movies, as opposed to those that are derivative and lacking any spark of imagination. Although many have rated it fairly well, I would put the newest, `Fantastic Four' at the bottom of the list, along with `Hellboy', which I happened to like, but which shares with `Fantastic Four' some serious difficulties to our suspending disbelief. These movies are simply made for fun. You can almost sense the tongue in cheek attitude of the writer and director, let alone the actors. The situation which creates the superpowers is simply too improbable to accept. How is it that a single physical phenomenon would have five totally different effects on five normal, healthy humans? I know just enough about genetics to know how this may be explained, but the film narrative touches on none of this. We are just meant to swallow this story whole. In contrast, the transformation of Matt Murdock is totally plausible. Enhanced senses following loosing one sense are very real. They just posited a bit more than normal ability in that direction. The genesis of Peter Parker's superpowers is a bit more sci fi, but totally believable, given the chance to believe a genetically enhanced spider species. `Daredevil' is probably the least popular of these three movies, and the first time I watched it, it didn't do much for me. On second watching, especially with the extras on the DVD, I appreciated that the moviemakers really accomplished something here. The premise behind both hero and villains is totally plausible and the director, special effects crew, and actors increase this verisimilitude by using very few CGI effects and stunt doubles. Most of what you see on the screen is really Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, and Colin Farrell, enhanced with a few wires to accomplish some of the more adventuresome gymnastics. The filmmakers also enhance the picture by doing a lot of the key scenes at night. This is totally logical, as the sightless Daredevil would have the advantage when his sighted rivals would be almost as visually handicapped as he is. `Daredevil' also has the added value of at least three very human relationships. Along with some of the `Batman' and `Superman' flicks, this holds the penultimate spot in superhero quality films. `Spiderman' is easily on the top tier of superhero movies, based not only on the believability of the premise and the humanity of the actors, but also on the relatively effortless special effects, lightly applied to great effect. I also think the actors contribute much to the quality of this film, where with Toby McGuire, there seems to have been just a bit of casting against type, the way Michael Keaton was cast as Batman in the first Tim Burton `Batman'. While I never read `DareDevil' or `Hellboy' comic books, I am familiar with the original `Fantastic Four' and `Spiderman' comics, so I think the relative merit of the films has a lot to do with the relative merit of the comics, since `Spiderman' is the traditional champion among strong comic book fans. I should add a plug for performances by Michael Chiklis in `Fantastic Four' for his comic relief and by Ben Affleck in `DareDevil' for taking the role so seriously, possibly through the influence of his good buddy, Kevin Smith, who appears in a cameo role as the medical examiner.

The movie Spider-man is a dream come true to the true fans of the comic series as well as a pleasant surprise to moviegoers who are looking for a decent and exciting storyline of a superhero. The storyline covers in good measured detail Peter Parker's path from high school teenage period to a hero with a burden and a matured mind. "The story is about a girl ...", a great story-focus, M.J. and the pure and committed love expressed throughout by Peter Parker. Such noble and pure feelings of a introverted boy for a girl next door, old fashioned but in such a manner that proves that a love theme is always powerful and above every action packed sequence. The Green Goblin character demanded more attention since such a modern Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde theme is essential to the dramatization of the story. The soundtrack was exceptionally subtle and did not go for the easy musical trademark setting of the superhero. Well played out and well put through out the movie. The story of Spider-Man is a modern tragedy. The character is going through a roller coaster of emotional changes due to unpredictable life turning events. Not your average superhero story. The director along with the writing team must have consciously aimed to that effect. The tragedy though does not give away to an ending, because sequels need to be made, all of them welcome if properly done. The ending provides the base of Peter Parker's tragedy. The girl that he loved since he was six year old must finally be deprived of his true feelings for her. How come though? Simply, because he cherishes her life much more than his love gratification, he understands that Spider-Man can not allow any future Nemesis to hurt the people in his heart. His heart is turned to wood instead, amazing and furthermore beautifully sad how unselfish love manifests on such occasions. Congratulations to all the people involved in the movie. We all hope for a great follow up that is based on the very same ethics of story telling and of course new and more developed evil characters. | | | | | | | | | | | | Pretty Good / 2005-12-18
Spiderman and Spiderman 2 are two fast action action movies which hinge on the implausible. Realizing that we can look at the movies which a great suspension of believe. Of course there is some debate over which kiss was better but I prefer the one in 2 at the end. It is one of the greatest film kisses in the history of film. When Mary J. says go get em tiger you know that he and she will be married in the next film when it is made. It is every lonely mans dream to have a good women kiss him and tell him to go get em. The green goblin in the first one and Doc Ock in the second one are suitable nasty. Of course we have to realize that the actor who was nasty in the first one started his career as Jesus Christ in King of Kings. What a contrast for them to make from one actors carer. But, this is a very good film and worth your time to watch. Sit back and open up your soda, put the bowl of popcorn on the table and get comfortable. You're in for a real good time with your feet up on the coffee table. You won't fall asleep. | | | | | | | | | | | | A fantastic, fun, and well-made superhero film / 2005-12-09
At the time of its release, "Spider-Man" was considered by many to be the best superhero movie ever made. It has since been surpassed by three films, one of which is its outstanding sequel, "Spider-Man 2". "Spider-Man" is still amongst the very best superhero movies, though, behind "X-Men" and in front of "Superman". Tobey Maguire stars as Peter Parker, a nerdy high school student who undergoes a series of unusual changes after being bitten by a new species of spider. Parker eventually becomes web-slinging superhero Spider-Man, in love with the girl next door, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). Unfortunately for Peter, Mary Jane is dating Peter's best friend, Harry Osborn (James Franco), whose father (Willem Dafoe) is the latest threat to New York City. Sam Raimi, who previously had directed only cult films (most of which were excellent), proves that he is more than capable of directing big-budget pictures. He does a great job of focusing on the adventure of the Spider-Man legend, as well as Peter Parker's impossible romance with Mary Jane and his need for secrecy. The cast is very good. Tobey Maguire was a perfect choice for Peter Parker, making him a very likable character, as well as one that we can feel for. Willem Dafoe is enjoyably over-the-top as the Green Goblin/Norman Osborn, while J.K. Simmons is perfectly cast as J. Jonah Jameson. "Evil Dead" fans: Bruce Campbell is the announcer at the wrestling match. David Koepp's script remains faithful to the comics on which it's based, while never being too cheesy or unbelievable. It's funny and well-written. Danny Elfman's soundtrack is excellent. At times it's reminescent of his magnificent soundtrack for Tim Burton's "Batman". The music really heightens the level of excitement for the movie. "Spider-Man" is a fantastic, fun, and well-made superhero film, but it's also much more: it's a great movie. Thanks primarily to the directing of Sam Raimi, the acting of Tobey Maguire and a high-flying soundtrack by Danny Elfman, this is a film that can be watched again and again. | | | | | | | | | | | | Needs more Spider-Man, Less Peter Parker / 2005-12-06
Let me preface this review by saying I'm a comic book fan, but not a Spider-Man fan. Scratch that. I like Spider-Man. It's that whiny little Peter Parker I could do without. Now, in the comics this isn't much of a problem. We spend far more time with Spidey than his alter-ego. In this film though, Parker dominates. And every time he stands on screen looking miserable I just start to zone out. Frankly, I just don't feel that bad for him. The guy gets superpowers and keeps complaining about the terrible responsibility. I know that's a theme of the comics, but Spidey in the comics always seems to handle it so much better. His bad luck and poor me attitude never seemed excessively narcissistic. Here Peter mopes through most of the film, and I reallly got sick of it. On the upside, there's some nice action in this film. Just not nearly enough of it. But the Green Goblin looks kind of lame. And that's saying something in a comic book universe. It's not a bad film. Just not very good and overlong. Am I the only one who's noticed that movies are getting longer without getting better? Editing makes or breaks a film, and this one could've easily been half-an-hour shorter. Anyway, I've seen it twice and didn't hate it either time. But I'd never watch it again, and I've absolutely no desire to see Spider-Man 2 based on this film. | |
