He might as well be speaking for the legions of fans of the original episodes in the Star Wars saga who can't help but secretly ask themselves: Sure, this is Star Wars, but is it my Star Wars? The original elevated moviegoers' expectations so high that it would have been impossible for any subsequent film to meet them. And as with all the Star Wars movies, The Phantom Menace features inexplicable plot twists, a fistful of loose threads, and some cheek-chewing dialogue. Han Solo's swagger is sorely missed, as is the pervading menace of heavy-breather Darth Vader. There is still way too much quasi-mystical mumbo jumbo, and some of what was fresh about Star Wars 22 years earlier feels formulaic. Yet there's much to admire. The special effects are stupendous; three worlds are populated with a mélange of creatures, flora, and horizons rendered in absolute detail. The action and battle scenes are breathtaking in their complexity. And one particular sequence of the film--the adrenaline-infused pod race through the Tatooine desert--makes the chariot race in Ben-Hur look like a Sunday stroll through the park. Among the host of new characters, there are a few familiar walk-ons. We witness the first meeting between R2-D2 and C-3PO, Jabba the Hutt looks younger and slimmer (but not young and slim), and Yoda is as crabby as ever. Natalie Portman's stately Queen Amidala sports hairdos that make Princess Leia look dowdy and wields a mean laser. We never bond with Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), and Obi-Wan's day is yet to come. Jar Jar Binks, a cross between a Muppet, a frog, and a hippie, provides many of the movie's lighter moments, while Sith Lord Darth Maul is a formidable force. Baby-faced Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) looks too young and innocent to command the powers of the Force or wield a lightsaber (much less transmute into the future Darth Vader), but his boyish exuberance wins over skeptics. Near the end of the movie, Palpatine, the new leader of the Republic, may be speaking for fans eagerly awaiting Episode II when he pats young Anakin on the head and says, "We will watch your career with great interest." Indeed! --Tod Nelson | | | | | | | |
 | Star Wars - Episode I, The Phantom Menace : 現地ハリウッド市民の評価 : 英語批評版 : Native Evaluation | | | | | What is this sh*t? / 2005-12-22
I have no idea what is going on here. Apparently this is Star Wars but I have no idea who any of these people are. Where is Vader? Where is Han? Obi Wan is in the movie but he is a different actor. This is unacceptable that they have replaced Sir Alec Guiness with a new young hip actor. Obi Wan plays opposite Macauley Culkin and Liam Nelson in this lame excuse for a "star wars" movie. Yes I know there are lightsabers but this is no star wars. The one part that I DID like was when Macauley Culkin was being chased in the pod race by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern that was pretty cool. Lotta holes on Tatooine indeed. Alec Guiness and Harrison Ford must be upset they were not asked to be a part of this movie. I'm sure it would have been a lot better. | | | | | | | | | | | | Adults shut up! / 2005-12-22
This movie is awesome but I am going to cut to the chase of what I have to say. This movie is getting reviews from adults who saw the original trilogy and are saying things like it's not my star wars. What they don't understand is that it's not supposed to be theirs! The original trilogy was excellent and I love it. These movies I enjoy too. The original trilogy was made for that generation of people. Now the prequel trilogy was meant this generation. So, what I'm saying is that these original trilogy worshipers need to shut up. | | | | | | | | | | | | Just a great movie! / 2005-12-22
I'm a part of the Star Wars Generation of the 70's and 80's! Heck the first movie I saw was Star Wars - Episode IV: A New Hope back in the summer of 77. It's been a part of my entire existence and I thank God for George Lucas. The long wait between 1983 and 1999 was indeed a long one. Sure there were novels and comic books in the meantime but they weren't Star Wars. Not really. But Episode I was certainly worth the wait! Most people would assume with Episode I that Lucas wouldv'e started small and then built things up throughout his trilogy but instead he started BIG with a capitol B and he ended EPIC with his Episode III. Episode I was smart, fun and fast paced. Sure the more nuerotic moviegoers let a silly character like Jar Jar ruin their experience but the more hardcore fans saw and appreciated what Lucas was doing-starting the series light and then growing darker as it progresses. It paid off big time! In the end we got a movie that was worthy of the reputation of the Original Trilogy and we got a new trilogy that bettered what came before it! The Phantom Menace rocks! The Prequel Trilogy rules and George Lucas has cemented himself as the finest visual storyteller of all time. Buy this movie! It does NOT disapoint! | | | | | | | | | | | | not what it could have been / 2005-12-20
when i first saw this film i loved it,and i always remember the light-saber duel beetwen darth mual and the jedi's. but now after wacthing it a few times i have seen that it really wasn't what it could of been. the film was made up of crummy dioluge some action and an ending that wasn't wprth the watch. also the film should have focused less time on jar-jar binks! he is a completly stupid charecter. the film although bad did have it's good parts and such. this movie is rated PG for sci-fi action\violence. the film deserved the rating,[like any other star wars] and the violence was kept mild. there was no languge kissing or any thing of that sort. it was not a scary film at all but it might not be the perfect film to take youre 4 year olds to. overall the film was not what it could have been and totally worse than the old trilogy.

The first in my series of reviews on Star Wars. Well, yeah, I am a sweek (star wars geek) and this is my third favorite of the star wars movies. First of all, I agree that the acting is not too good IN SOME CASES. Lucas gives everyone horrible lines however Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon Jinn), Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Samuel L. Jackson (Mace Windu) manage to give good performances (considering the lines). Natalie Portman also does well. Jake Lloyd (Anakin Skywalker) is a great talent but again, Lucas gives really corny lines. Yoda is good...much preferred in Eps II and III, but good. Darth Maul (don't know name) is very good for a character who says about ten words the entire film. Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best) can be called annoying but in my opinion, he's not too bad. I hate to harp on this but again, better lines would have improved him. Besides, his stupidity becomes crucial in Ep II (won't say how). Enough on acting. The movie itself was great. I was not disappointed, but if you listen to the naysayers you will be. Special effects were quite good. I think Mr. Lucas should (a) get better lnes and (b) learn how to direct a love scene. That's really it. I won't reveal the story--watch it for yourself to find out. By the way, try watching the movies in order. Not in the order that they came out, that's a bad idea. But anyawy, I'll move on to Ep II next. Happy viewing! God bless.
