Kenya (Sanaa Lathan, Out of Time, Alien Vs. Predator), a successful accountant, gets set up on a blind date with Brian (Simon Baker, The Ring Two)--only to discover that he's white, leading her to cut the date short. At a party, Kenya admires the garden and gets introduced to the landscape architect: Brian. Thus begins a bumpy but increasingly sparky relationship, despite opposition from Kenya's friends and family, as well as Kenya and Brian's own internal resistance. Make no mistake, Something New is a mainstream romantic comedy, with ridiculously attractive people grappling with problems that get solved with just a little too much ease--but along the way, Kriss Turner's script, Sanaa Hamri's direction, and Baker's and especially Lathan's performances ground the movie in something resembling the real world. Kenya's and Brian's emotional terrain has a genuine texture to it; the rhythm of the dialogue and the visual pacing allows their characters to breathe and become more genuine and vivid than your standard rom-com lovers. The strong supporting cast--including Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Mike Epps (Next Friday), and Blair Underwood (Full Frontal)--doesn't hurt. I loved this movie. I haven't seen a romantic comedy as enjoyable as this one in a very long time. I highly recommend this movie. It was sweet, funny and romantic. Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker had great chemistry together. This is a movie for anyone who loves romantic comdies. This movie certainly has sparked a great deal of dialogue on internet message boards--good and bad. Personally, I absolutely loved this film and have seen it more than once. Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker give very believeable and heartfelt performances of two people from different races and backgrounds falling in love. It is simply a joy to watch this love story unfold. I really enjoyed the supporting cast and especially the banter among her girlfriends. I couldn't wait to see this movie, and when I finally did, it was well worth the wait. So much of it reminded me of my own dating experience and finally marriage to a white man 16 years and counting). This is a movie about not settling, being comfortable in your own skin, and keeping love real. The fact that this film does not cover a lot of new ground is part of its charm. It has an easy-going appeal that should make most viewers happy they spent the time seeing it. I would have liked to see the film deal more with the issue of black female and male educational disparity. This is the main reason why so many educated African-American women cannot find a suitable partner within their community. From a sociological standpoint African-American women were given more access to power and resources, because they were viewed as less of a threat, in a society that was segregated until a relatively late date. As a result a yawning chasm has opened up between African-American men and women. The percentage of unmarried African-American women is a major theme and it would have been interesting to explore it roots. At the same time it is good that the relationship between the two leads is not portrayed as a joke, or in a trite and patronizing manner. | | | | | | | |
