A self-centered raccoon named RJ (voiced by Bruce Willis, Die Hard) steals and accidentally destroys the hoard of an angry bear (Nick Nolte, 48 Hours), who gives the raccoon a week to replace it. RJ despairs--until he meets an odd gang of foragers, ranging from a turtle named Verne (Garry Shandling, The Larry Sanders Show), a father/daughter duo of opossums (the bizarre pairing of William Shatner and pop singer Avril Lavigne), a family of porcupines (with A Mighty Wind's Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara as the parents), and a hyperactive squirrel named Hammy (Steve Carell, The 40 Year Old Virgin). By convincing these friendly beasts that the suburban homesteads on the other side of a recently erected hedge are a mother-lode of cast-off food, RJ hopes to dupe them into doing his gathering. But when the suburban residents realize they've been invaded by woodland pests, an exterminator is called to take care of the problem. The overarching storyline of Over the Hedge is pure formula--your basic "family matters more than anything" lesson--but moment to moment, the movie is delightfully crisp and clever. The animation is topnotch, the acting is excellent (other voices include those of Allison Janney, The West Wing, and Thomas Haden Church, Sideways), and the satirical jabs at consumerism are actually funny. An above-average animated movie. --Bret Fetzer | | | | | | | | | Over the Hedge : 現地ハリウッド市民の評価 : 英語批評版 : Native Evaluation | | | | | If you got kids... / 2006-06-15
Look no further for your summer fun! Over the Hedge has enough gags and jokes to keep adults and children laughing alike. The whole movie is a play on suburbanization, with tons of rips on food, cell phones, and annoying over-obsessive lawn moms. The animations are great, and the all-star cast doing the voices makes the movie even better. One joke, in particular, involving energy drinks had me out of my seat laughing quite hard. Highly recommended kids and adults alike. | | | | | | | | | | | | Fun for the whole family! / 2006-06-15
You'll laugh and have a great time with the whole family when you watch this great movie! The way this movie portrays suburbia is good clean fun on the big screen. Yes, we sit in recliners, drive giant SUVs, and use our cell phones to order food. And we throw quite a bit of food away, making garbage cans a virtual grocery store for our fury friends - even cartoon friends. The script is what makes this movie such a joy to watch. That and the fact that it isn't a Lion King-type musical that requires the viewer to sit through a cute song every few minutes. A quick rundown: RJ the raccoon destroys Vincent the bear's stored up food supply for when he wakes from hibernation. RJ runs into a group of furry critters who are feeling pinched by a giant row of hedges and new subdivision. RJ tricks the animals into helping him retrieve the items Vincent wants returned; and so the entire clan begins a professionally run assault on the suburban neighborhood. The fun never stops throughout this entire film. See ya next review.

A little too much greenie belief here for me, you know the story, animals good, people bad. People build houses, animals suffer, etc. However, the story had good parts too, I mean, families are good and we should do our part to support the family we are in. Of course that may be a push towards socialism, so who knows? My main complaint is the characters aren't really developed because we are treated to too much story. I think this is probably where the kids got lost too. I think my five year old enjoyed the movie, for the most part, the lights, camera, action thing gives even medicore movies some elevation towards being just plain entertaining. I'm going to complain that the exterminator character was a parody of a parody (Walken in the Mouse Trap) so I was a little put off by that part of the movie, I mean, really, but the kids don't know the difference, so I guess, so what? I can't say for sure if this is one I'll buy on dvd, I would say it's worth seeing, it's entertaining, whether at the movies or waiting for the rental, I can't say, your call... | | | | | | | | | | | | My favorite movie! / 2006-06-13
This is probably the best animated movie I've ever seen, and is my favorite movie. I recommend it for everyone! | | | | | | | | | | | | A Cute Family Movie / 2006-06-12
It's not a good time to be RJ the raccoon (Bruce Willis). When he tries to steal a hidden stash of food from his friend, a bear named Vincent (Nick Nolte), RJ has a week to replace everything that's missing or it's curtains for him! Just when he's thinking all may be lost, RJ happens across a small group of animals: Hammy the Squirrel (Steve Carell), Ozzie (William Shatner) and his daughter Heather (Avril Lavigne) who are possums, Stella the Skunk (Wanda Sykes), a family of porcupines that include Lou (Eugene Levy) and Penny (Catherine O'Hara) and the group's leader, a turtle named Verne (Garry Shandling). The group of animals has just awakened from hibernation and is surprised to find an overgrown hedge (which they nickname "Steve") that separates the area they live in from suburbia. RJ sees an opportunity to get free help in gathering the food for Vincent by tricking the other animals into stealing food from the humans nearby. The animals, who have never had nacho chips or cookies before, are amazed. RJ's plans go awry when Gladys (Allison Janney), the president of the local home owner's association, calls in Dwayne a.k.a. "The Verminator" (Thomas Haden Church) to take care of the "pests". He also has his hands full with an increasingly suspicious Verne, who suspects things just aren't right. Will the animals and suburbia live happily ever after or will they be terminated by the Verminator? "Over the Hedge" was another movie I was a little wary to see. But I was pleasantly surprised by this one. While the movie is geared towards children, it does have a few elements that adults will appreciate. I especially liked the homage to "Citizen Kane" in the "rosebud" scene with Ozzie. There was also the "Stella!" scene with Gladys' cat which was reminiscent of "A Streetcar Named Desire". I also thought the story was good. The plot was unique and well paced. As far as characters go, I think that Hammy almost stole the show but there are things to like about each character, even the Verminator. The only downside to the movie could be predictability. It may be easy to figure out where the whole story is going. But, part of the fun is seeing how things unfold in order to get to a happy ending. "Over the Hedge" is a fun, animated film. It's a movie that will be enjoyed by people of all ages.
