Theme of Today :

The background of their culture

(2005/07/03)(2006/03/19 update)

I read the book written by Japanese businessman, Shinohara Tsukasa, whose wife is a Korean. He goes back and forth between Japan and Korea for business reasons. The title of the book is "Korean wife is a good wife!? ("Tsuma wo metoraba kankoku-jin!?" in Japanese, published by Bungeishunju-sha on March,1999) In this book, he describes and discusses the difference in ways of thinking and culture between two nations. I want to translate some parts (about culture and history) to help you understand the background about "Kumdo problem".

Needless to say, his position is very different from Izawa Motohiko ( the novelist and critic ). Additionally, Mr Shinohara writes that he have friendly feelings for Koreans, and enjoy associating with many Koreans.

However, he gives Koreans candid advice frankly. And the opinions of Mr. Shinohara and Mr. Izawa have many similarities - their background of petit Sinocentrism (petit Chinese nationalism), the reason their unique culture hardly survive, and their fraud of history education.

I may update this chapter later, because I want to translate another part.

From "A Korean wife is a good wife!?"
From "When do you use respect language?" (2006/03/19 Added)

(Translater's note: It's almost like "Name" have more special meanings to Koreans than Japanese. Koreans do not have to think the cars are originally Japanese ones, because Japanese cars have Korean names. They also believe Kendo is originally Korean culture when they call Kendo "Kumdo". )

...throughout Korea, you can find subway lines, a dam and expressways constructed by ODA funds from Japan. No one knows they were built by the aid of Japan. They are so happy people not to care others, and to believe they have done everything by themselves.

In Korea, there are many cars, which are exact copies of Mitsubishi's DEBONAIR or HONDA's LEGEND, running the streets. But they have different names, which are Hyundai's GRANDEUR or Daewoo's ARCADIA. Therefore common Korean people do not know they are the cars of Japan. Of course, they do not know their parts, example engines, are manufactured with the Japan's many technologies.

When my wife went to Tokyo, she was glad to find DEBONAIR at Marunouchi(representative business area in Japan), and said "Oh, that's Uricha(the same car as ours)!". But I said "That was originally a Mitsubishi's car.". Then she became dejected.

From "Affection" (2005/08/02 Added)

(Translator's note : it seem to be around in 1980 that the auther studied in Korea. Then I do not know Korean students share their toothbrushes or short pants till now. )

The father of my wife, "Chan In Nim" in Korean, suddenly died seven or eight years ago. When we were notified of his death in Tokyo, we went to Narita airport at once, and boarded the plane. As soon as my wife arrived at her parents' house and saw her father's body, she began to cry bitterly with her mother and sisters, of course. Before this, I said my wife that people must bear the sadness stoically and must keep back his tears (Translator's note : in front of people ) in Japan even when losing their family. My wife blamed me that Japanese are cold-blooded. But I could not cry bitterly, and I only looked at the ground near my wife.

Koreans are very emotional. They don't try control their emotion, but rather show it directly. I hear Koreans think "Japanese are cunning." "We can not trust Japanese.", when Japanese keep back his tears, or control his emotion. Japanese decorum is basically built from one of Samurai class. Then it is indecorum to tear his hair or to cry bitterly in Japan. I said so to my wife many times, but she had no ear in this particular case.

When I lived in boarding house for students, I was surprised to see that Korean students lent their toothbrushes to each other, and shared their under short pants. I think it is no wonder that two women hold hands, but I often saw two men held hands in Korea. I heard they were never gays and it is common matter on intimate habits. They can not feel easy not to touch directly each other.

(Translator's note: Sorry I've forgotten to ranslate these italic parts 2006/01/13)

When our oldest girl was very young, I have once tried to sleep interposing her between me and my wife as a common Japanese family. That is called "sleep as the character of river" (Translator's note: The Chinese character "river" is made of three vertical lines, and the center one is short.")

Then my wife got very angry, and said "Do you become to dislike me? Do you have a lover?" She never believed me when I said "Many families sleep in this style in Japan." Later, the TV animation program "Crayon Shin-chan" proved my innocence. In this program, Shin-chan's parents sleep interposing Shin-chan between them. But when we went to my parents' house, she was angry again to see that my parents slept in separate rooms, saying "Japanese are cold-hearted.". Speaking of her parents, they had slept on a same futon even in their old age.

Chinese character,"River"
From "Super academic-oriented society "

(Translator's note : I know some people ( foreigners or Koreans) illustrate the Korean society with aristocracies'(Yang Pans') nature of Joseon Dynasty. I could not find anyone illustrate that with their lost (when...?) Samurai? society. )

I have once read how all the founder of the zaibatsu conglomerates had became successful. I explained the 30 zaibatsu from these books. In their birth of business, their dramas were full of lucks, courage and efforts. But I can not find interesting in their stories after becoming successful. Because all of them affect Yang Pan in the age of Joseon Dynasty.

Korean culture is the aristocratic culture. Therefore, to be intellectuals means to live like aristocrats. I can not understand it. Culture and wealth do not relate by nature. But in the age of Joseon Dynasty, culture was monopoly of Yang Pan, who formed a part of community.

In Japan, there was deluxe culture as Momoyama culture. In the meantime, there was simple culture of "wabi" or "sabi". Noh and Kyougen represent the culture of Samurai. In the meantime, Bunraku and Kabuki represent the culture of the common people. Perhaps Korean people had not acclaimed as artists such persons as Saigyou ( poet (1118-1190) ) or Miyamoto Musashi( the swordsman and artist (1584 - 1645) ). In Japan, It is rather bad to want only wealth and honor, but it is absolutely right in Korea. My wife can not understand such "strange" sense of value in Japan.

She often asks me "Why is it no good to make money?". Koreans can not understand Tsuchimitsu Toshio lead a simple life. He was a chairman of Japan Federation of Economic Organizations, who was a top of the business world. There is no background to accept the thought of honest poverty in Korea.

From "Made in Korea"

(Translator's note : There are many differences in cultural background between Japan and Korea. In Korea, it seems to be difficult to take over tradition beyond generations or to establish the culture of disciplining of body.)

Wherever you go in Korea, you can find few old-established stores. Koreans sell their stores and others after they succeeded, and stop their business. They could not bring up old-established stores have a long histories as several decades or hundreds-of-years.

Some Japanese live a life dedicated to their pursuits as a Chinese noodle maker. A Japanese run Japanese-style confection store for ten generations. Koreans think they are most fearful incompetent persons.
Such disdain for labor and business are remnant from the nature of Yang Pan in the days of Joseon Dynasty. Their ideal lifestyle is enjoying a life of luxury, reading books.

Therefore many adult males are idle in daytime in Korea. I work in my home, and I often walk around my apartment or the department store nearby. But nobody wonder about it in Korea. Instead, I am object of envy to the people in my neighborhood because they think I am rich enough to be idle. In Japan, many people think I have no job or do doubtful business. But I am free of care in Korea. If my wife were a Japanese, she would say "It's disgraceful that you are idle, so you had better go anywhere else.". But my wife does not say such a thing, and does not think It's disgraceful.

From "Androcentrism"

(Translator's note : It is a headache-maker for Japanese living in Korea that Korean teachers speak ill of Japan by teaching lies.)

My brother-in-law operates his fruit orchard from a few years ago. He grows apples and pears. His apples are "Fuji", and his pears are "Niitakanashi". In spring, many pretty flowers are covered the hill. Japanese fruit brand captures Korean market. For example, grapes, peaches and oranges. Peculiarly, I feel the country of Japan when I come here. Here, Honam prefecture had strong associations with Japan during the colonial period. Honam prefecture was the largest breadbasket in Korea. A great amount of rice was exported to Japan from here. It is a proper buying, selling and trading. But after independence from Japan, Korean schools teach their students "Japan deprived us of our rice." Many young Koreans believe their say completely. Fortunately, my wife forgot all what her teacher said in the classroom. She does not believe what she experienced personally.

From "Remnant from the days of Joseon Dynasty"

When the trial began about Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo, I said my wife "This trial is unreasonable. They had been dropped before. Nevertheless they are about to go on trial on the same case again by the retroactive law newly enacted. This is the abuse of public office. Don't the prosecutors or judges have their conscience? They are only putty in someone's hands". But she said for granted, "Because they should be hard to object, if they will be arrested or fired." Don't kick against the pricks. This is Koreans' way to deal with person of power.

This is exactly worship of the powerful, but Koreans hate to be pointed out that. When they discuss their worship of the powerful over drinks, they begin bloody battle. I have ever seen it. The words,"Worship of the powerful" put Koreans into a wild rage.

Joseon Dynasty was a dependent state to China(Sino). A dependent state does not have diplomatic right, and the army of colonial master is stationed in their country, which is almost colony settlement.
In the end of the 19 century, the bruising political fight occurred between the civilization group and the conservative group( party of "worship of the powerful" ). Kim Ok-kyoon and Bak Yeong-hyo represented the former, and insisted to set out their independence. The latter insisted to depend on Sino as in the past. The party of "worship of the powerful" won at last. Kim Ok-kyoon and his group were killed and their heads were exposed to on public display beside Kan river. Even now Kim Ok-kyoon and his group are supposed to be the traitor to the ethnic Korean because they relied on Japan. After that Japan defeated Sino(China) that is why Joseon Dynasty became independent from Sino and declared herself Korean Empire. At that time Independence Gate was built to celebrate her independence. The gate still exists near East Great Gate.

Japan and Sina fought the Japanese-Sino War, but their battle fields were almost Korean peninsula except the battle of Weihai(sea fight). Then Japan defeated Russia, and annexed the Korean Peninsula at last. Korean Empire disappeared and Korean Peninsula became colony settlement of Japan. I understand how deeply Koreans regretted. But Koreans should frankly admit to their worship of the powerful which were found here and there in modern history of Korea. Koreans clamped down on Kim Ok-kyoon by themselves. Was only Ri wanyong is responsible for Japan's annexation? Koreans have a guilty conscience about it, which is caused by their worship of the powerful. They may just bristle at the thought that anyone point out it.

From "The more you become familiar, the more you come under threat"

The island named Jindo exists in the south of Jeonranamdo. A popular song made this island famous among Japanese. Korean are proud of the dogs named "Jindogyeon" which are believe to originate from Jindo. But this dogs are look-alike for "Shiba-inu" of Japan from any angle. I don't care which is ancestor or descendant, but I want to propose DNA analysis when I heard "Jindogyeon are the best dogs in the world, they are national pride of Korea". They have better perform DNA analysis.

Koreans need to know calmly what objective status is and what outer world is like. My wife do not say such a thing as "a big fish in a little pond" because she have been staying in Japan for several years and she have been to South-west Asia and China. By contraries, she is often shocked that Koreans always imitate foreign people.
Japanese also imitated China in ancient times and imitated Western Europe since the Meiji Era. But Japanese do not say Akita-ken(Japanese dog) is the best dog in the world and do not say Japanese is a best language. Mt. Fuji and Kyoto are truly one of a kind, I think, not because Japanese say so but because foreigners say so at first. What makes such distinction? I think the reason is Koreas' emotional dependence on their community all in all.

From "Politics and literature"

(Translator's note : The extreme anti-Japanese education is a cradle of the strange theory that Kendo originated from Korea. To many Koreans, It is obvious that "Pro-Japan" is a traitor. This is one motivation which makes Koreans broadcast such a theory. But this also is a seed of invading Japanese culture.)

...In Korea, whoever branded as a "pro-Japan literature" is not subjected to study any more.
I am very skeptical about such a labeling or easygoing way of estimating. In the first place, learning can not be established. Because ideology such as "anti-Japan" or "pro-Japan" decide everything. In history, this tendency is more remarkable. They only argue about whether a person is "anti-Japan" or not.

At the end of Joseon Dynasty, Kim Ok-kyoon, the leader of Independence Party, tried to modernize Korea, but he was understated because he was supposed to help Japan to invade Korea. But the latest studies on history made him to be revaluated. When his traditional low valuation has turned out unreasonable, Koreans began to say "Kim Ok-kyoon is great, because he was not pro-Japan." or "His reformation ended in failure because Japan betrayed him". These were a lame excuses to revaluate him. This is so-called "makeshift". The more casuistry they use, the less meaning academically their criteria is.

On a recent TV program, I knew the descendents of Ri Wan-yong file a lawsuit against government to take back the land Ri Wan-yong owned. A professor said, "It is outrageous that the descendents of traitor want to take back the land once acquired by money from Japan. The reporter also agreed with him.

They have no idea to deal with the case under the laws, and decide prematurely "pro-Japan" is "evil".
Koreans' views of history is consist of blaming others. It is heteronomous.

They use the legitimate reason as an excuse, insist that they are right, and never question the responsibility of themselves. It is justified by the logic of Zhu Xi studies ( a sort of Confucism ). They only discuss it is "pro-Japan" or not, and do not have much interests in fact situation.
Kim Young-sam, past president arrested Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo, who were also presidents, by passing retrospective law. He said his aim was "re-building their history". But the new history never rebuilds old history. Chinese are afraid of leaving ugly blots on their history, because they know that no one can rewrite past history. The line of presidents often justified themselves by blaming on the past administration. The Korean people always satisfied themselves by blaming their ex-president, and the past administrations were always miserable on their evening.

It is unfair only Kim Young-sam is blamed for bringing the IMF age. Both political community and financial community are blamed naturally, and each Korean people are also responsible. But politicians blame Zaibatsu, Zaibatsu blame laborers' union, and Korean people blame politicians and Zaibatsu. It is so-called "extremely grave situation" in Korean language.

From "Koreans in China"

(Translator's note : Is that long ago that Koreans were proud of petit Sinocentrism (petit Chinese nationalism)?)

In business, I am interesting how Koreans think about Chinese and how Korean companies advanced to China. But the reputations of Koreans seem to be negative. In Beijing a cab driver dislike Koreans because of their attitude. China had been the colonial master of Korea until the age of Joseon Dynasty. Korean intellectuals were dedicated to study Confucianism and other Chinese culture.

But Korea took her place among advanced country little earlier than China, and now Koreans often have many troubles with their extreme arrogance because of their wealth.

About 20 years ago, 50 or 60 thousands of Chinese were living in Korea. But now they were decreased dramatically to 20 or 30 thousands. In Japan, many people raised the problems that many Koreans or North-Koreans were discriminated in various forms. Alien finger printings were also accused by the Korean government. But just in Korea, Chinese are discriminated in an obvious manner. It is so illogical that Chinese are allowed to run only Chinese restaurant. We Japanese also must be fingerprinted (all fingers) for alien registration.

Such a selfish manner is a Korean characteristic. Korea broke official relations with Taiwan in a unilateral way without any word when she resumed diplomatic relations with China in 1992. Almost Chinese living in Korea came from Shandong on the other side of the sea which is continent, but many of them had the nationalities of Taiwan. Then many Chinese left Korea when Korea resumed relations with China.
