My Buddy (Gus Kahn/ Walter Donaldson)

Life is a book that we study,
Some of its leaves bring a sigh,
There it was written, my buddy,
That we must part, you and I.

Nights are long since you went away,
I think about you all through the day,
My buddy, my buddy, nobody quite so true.

I miss your voice, the touch of your hand,
I long to know that you understand,
My buddy, my buddy, your buddy misses you

Buddies through all the gay days,
Buddies when something went wrong;
I wait alone through the gray days,
Missing your smile and your song.

It's a very old song that was written in 1922.
And it was Donaldson's most personal. The poignant strains of the song were an expression of his grief at the death of his fiancee... (@ "America's Songs")

Henry Burr sings it then: 1922.

Sinatra sings with Harry James Band: 1939.
Bobby Darin sings it fine: "Oh! Look at Me Now" 1962.
Famous Chet Baker plays the horn and sings: "Chet Baker Sings" w/ Russ Freeman, Jimmy Bond & Lawrence Marable: 1956.

Dinah Shore sings very finely: "Somebody Loves Me " Andre Previn: 1982.
Nancy Sinatra sings, too: "Sugar" 1967.
Bernadette Peters sings nice on stage.
Sonny Stitt takes the tenor: "My Buddy" w/ Barry Harris, Sam Jones & Leroy Williams: July 2, 1975.
Count Basie does it here: 1947.
Stan Getz gigs with Cal Tjader, Scotty LaFaro & more: 1959.
Jackie Gleason makes it very sweetie: "Velvet Brass" 1957.
Barbra Streisabd sings here: "The Way We Were" 1974.
Eydie Gorm«± sings it on TV: 1958.

Judy Garland sings with Dich Shawn on her show.

Now, that's all, this time.

July 5 is death day of Harry James.

Born in Albany, Georgia, in 1916.
Was a musician who is best known as a trumpet playing band leader who led a big band from 1939 to 1946. He broke up his band for a short period in 1947 but shortly after he re-organized his band and was active again with his band from then until his death in 1983.

I wrote about Harry James in 2009 in my page.
Read the former one, if you'd like to more.
I've bee very busy this week. so I'll finish the page sooner.

Anyway, I keep watching the tennis in London on TV every evening and night.
Surely I am very happy for watching it!

Sinatra recorded just once:
