...the delicate sonic landscapes of the young composer ... oboe multiphonics, clings of metallic percussion and shimmers of tam-tam suggest ancient prayer rites; bent pitches on flute echo the quiet keening of the Japanese shakuhachi. "Ikaruga" shimmers with subtleties of color and atmosphere that sound at once old and new and very beautiful.

"MMTA's 2005 Commissioned Composer was Mukai Kohei, of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. His work Fantasie on Japanese Children's Songs II was performed at the MMTA Conference in Columbia. Each year the Commissioned Composer is also entered in MTNA's Distinguished Composer of the Year Award competition. This year Mukai was one of three Honorable Mentions in that competition..."
